Claire Kristine and Henry James joined our family on June 21st (on Father?s Day) via c-section just before 10:00 p.m. They were born at 29w5d. Claire weighed in at 2 lbs 4.7 ounces, Henry weighed in at 3 lbs. They are both in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and are doing fabulous. They are both very feisty which we know will serve them well in there. Here?s the birth story - I tried doing a short version, but it still turned out long!
We had our first (and last!) adventure in Labor and Delivery on Wednesday night (June 17th). I had been feeling contractions late in the evening on Tuesday (the 16th) but they weren't consistent, so I figured they were Braxton Hicks. I went for my doctor?s appointment and ultrasound the next day, they monitored me to see exactly what was happening and sure enough, I was having contractions. My ultrasound showed things were looking good ? both babies were moving around and my cervix was still long and closed (3.9cm). My doctor was originally planning on sending us hope to keep an eye on what was happening, but later decided to admit me for the night for monitoring (after he had his hand on my belly for 3 minutes and I had two contractions). SO, we were admitted Wednesday, June 17th) at 4:30pm for 24-36 hours of observation. They gave me meds (terbutaline, procardia and indocin) which I responded well to. They also gave me the first dose of Betamethasone in case we ended up delivering within 2 weeks and I received the next dose the next evening. I don?t think they anticipated me delivering, but obviously it was better to be safe than sorry (and it?s a good thing too!). I had another ultrasound to check my cervix again on Friday and it was still long and closed. My contractions were pretty good most of the morning, and once again I think the doctors were planning on sending me home (obviously on bed rest) since I hadn?t had any changes in my cervix. However, we had another bout of pretty intense contractions that were about 7-9 minutes apart later in the afternoon...they gave me more terbutaline which helped but they wanted to still monitor me another night. Saturday all day was fairly quiet until we had our biophysical profile in the evening. That ultrasound showed that Baby A had little to no fluid ? the doctor suspected this was due to the indocin as that med can decrease fluid so we were put on continuous monitoring. We wanted to buy as much time as possible while keeping an extremely close eye of their heart rates and activity levels. Everything looked good through the night and into Sunday morning (June 21st). We had another biophysical on Sunday morning which still showed little to no fluid for Baby A, so we remained on continuous monitoring. Contractions were under control, however Baby A had a couple big decels on Sunday night that the doctor didn?t feel comfortable. He came in after these and called the ?urgent? c-section at 9:00pm and they arrived at 9:57 and 9:58! The c-section was fine, spinal was just a poke?the worst part was how nauseous I felt while they were putting everything back J
It was quite a crazy few days and even crazier now that they?ve arrived. It?s been hard with them in the NICU but they really are doing well, we?re just trying to figure out how to live our new ?normal? life. I?m recovering well from the c-section?the first couple days were pretty uncomfortable and I would be exhausted at the end of the day, however each day continues to get easier. My incision is slightly tender but I?m able to get around just fine ? stairs are ok and the doctor said I can drive as long as I feel well (I?m only on Motrin, no driving if I take the Percocet). It?s hard to believe they?re here!
