Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My weird child...

For the last few months, my son has had a slight obsession with brushes.  All kinds of brushes from toothbrushes to hair brushes.  We recently changed from the finger toothbrush (couldn't take him biting us!) to his very own toddler toothbrush.  On vacation he started to really take to his new toothbrush and was walking around with it often.  Now that we are back home, this new found friend has become his lovey.  He wouldn't go to sleep without his toothbrush on both naps and bedtime tonight.  So weird!  I fear he might choke on it or poke himself in the eye...so now I have to come up with some creative way for him to like something else this much!

  • LOL.  DS has a thing with brushes too, not to that extreme though.  He loves brushing his teeth and when I ask if he's ready to brush his teeth he gets excited and runs to the bathroom.  He also likes to take my makeup brushes and hair brushes when I'm getting ready.

  • Maybe you could have a special place for his toothbrush to "sleep" in the bathroom, and make a big production of putting it away there. He might get into that and you wouldn't have to worry about him sleeping with it.

That is a really good idea, I'm going to try that tomorrow!  Thanks!

Ben loves his toothbrush and would freak out when we were done brushing his teeth.  So, I tell him that Mr. Toothbrush is going 'night night' and I put him in the holder in the medicine cabinet...as Ben waves good night.  Since we started this, no more freaking out.

So there are other children out there obsessed with their toothbrush--so my child isn't as weird as I was thinking!

  • Oh yes.  If she can get her hands on one she walks around the house brushing the hair or teeth of every person ot doll/stuffed animal she can find.  I admit I let her have it (bad!) most of the time, but she usually wants to take it in the crib too.  So after I brush her teeth at night I let her brush her teeth and then I do "My turn" and drop the tooth paste into the sink and then tell her "your turn" and she just can't not throw the tooth brush into the sink, haha.  Good luck!

  • I have a friend who's DS insists on sleeping with a fork, so it could be weirder. LOL

  • My ds must be weird too then, he absolutely loves his tooth brush but his favourite is our lint brush.  He runs around brushing our pant legs, his hair, the dog, lol.
