I'm starting to freak out a little thinking about how many expensive things are on our registry. Every baby thing costs so much!
A $110 PNP, a $70 travel swing or $140 regular swing (can't decide!), $120+ car seats, a $60 activity mat, a $100+ high chair (haven't decided on that yet, either...)
I have plenty of less expensive stuff on our registry, too, but I can't imagine getting some of the more expensive things as gifts (especially since our parents all got us big stuff already - and we are so thankful - crib from dad and step-mom, travel system from mom, glider from DH's parents) ... we are going to be spending so much on this baby!
No point to this post, really ... just a small rant.
Re: Registry items ... so many are so expensive!
This is exactly why we've slowly been buying the bigger items on our own (so far we have crib, changing table, and bouncy chair.)
Our parents yelled at us saying they want to buy us stuff, but we reassured them there is PLENTY left there.
Also, I don't know if you're looking only at BRU prices. For whatever we don't get at a shower, we will buy at target or Wal Mart. Our bedding for example, is $99 at Target and $169 at BRU for the exact same thing.
Another thing I'm doing is my sister and I are sharing some items. She has a baby bjorn, but her son is 1, so I'm borrowing it, and then when she has the next one I'll pass it back.
Kids are expensive!
My sister said she got a lot of gift cards from extended family and that's what helped her finish preparing.
I included gift cards on my registry with a note that said, "Target gift cards to help us purchase larger items are welcome." I actually got quite a few of those. A lot of my relatives went in on the larger items together. It worked out kinda nicely. I also did not put any baby outfits on my registry. I still got a lot of them, though, but I think that people got the idea that I would rather have help for the bigger, more important items.
Another thing I did was put the crib and mattress on my registry, even though my inlaws had already purchased it. I then put "fulfilled" as the status on these items. To me, I felt that it helped people feel like the larger items were important to me.
I don't know, maybe I am weird, but I think that having a smaller registry, even though it had a lot of expensive items on it, sent a message that I was looking for the essentials, even though they are expensive (all the big items were purchased, and I got similar items that weren't on the registry, but I didn't really care because I am not picky).
Also, if you dont' get those big items. Many of them can wait until after baby, so you have time to buy them one at a time...
