Surname baby names (boy)

For some reason, I really like surname baby names. Do you think your last name would make a good boy's name? If so, please share. Or any good boy surname baby names you have heard. And if you don't like surnames used as baby names, great, don't bother to respond. Thanks!

Re: Surname baby names (boy)

  • We are using a surname for our son (if we have a boy) too!

  • I have heard a few good ones recently.

    Dalton, Dawson, Durham, Harrison, Weston

  • I like surnames as well. I was thinking of possibly doing Judson.   Also, I love your daughter's name. Cute, and original!
  • The best & most meaningful surnames are likely to be in your own family tree - why not look there?

  • My friends maiden name was Preston.  She named her son Preston.  I think if the name works, then it's a neat thing.

This.  I love the tradition of using family surnames as children's names; it's very common in my circle.  I think it's incredibly pretentious-sounding and wannabe-WASPy to pick a random surname that isn't connected to your family, though.

i know what you mean, but i think some last names have been used so much as first names that no one even recognizes them as last names anymore.

for instance, cole seems to be a very popular boy first name, however, i grew up with someone with that last name.  i'm sure most people don't even think of cole as a last name, i know i wouldn't, but for knowing my neighbors.

  • I love Carter - if we have a boy we are naming him Carter.

  • I have no idea if anyone would use it as a first name, but in my family, a couple of the guys just go by the last name, Foster, at family events and with their own immediate families.

I'm not sure I would use it, but it is different for a first name.

  • DS was almost Jefferson.  DD is Campbell and we wanted to continue with another surname for him.  Alas, it didn't go over well, and we chose something else.
  • Campbell, Olson (I saw Colson in a name book and liked that, too), Anderson, Porter, Graham, Ellison, Kingsley

  • My maiden name is Turner, and I've seen some boys named that... I think it's kinda cute.
  • DH's grandfather's name was Shepherd Shepherd and my GGF's name was William Williams.  I'd advise against that.  I do like the name Shepherd though.

  • I really like Anderson and Mitchell

I also like Harrison, Preston, Ellis,

  • I like the surnames for boys names trend personally.

How about Sullivan or Marshall?  I also LOVE Carter.

  • I love Sawyer, Pierce/Pierson, Parker, Easton, Campbell (my maiden name), Bennett, Carson, Anderson, Duncan...
  • My maiden name is Clark, I would love to use it as a boy's name.
  • I like Harrison, Lincoln, Ronan, Sawyer, Reese and Hunter.  My last name wouldn't work very well but my mother's maiden name, Foster, would make a nice boy's name.
  • I have always loved the name Emmerson.

  • Our surname is Humphrey. We joke about naming LO Humphrey Humphrey sometimes.

    ?

My maiden name is Frank, which I don't think I'll use.

  • We obviously are using a surname for our little guy, Carter, but that was a fluke. It just turned out to be the only name we could agree on for our LO that went with our last name.

My last name wouldn't work but my friend's maiden name is Riley so that is her youngest son's name. MIL's maiden name is Perry and that is her youngest son's name; he also has FIL's adopted father's last name as his middle name, so 3 last names make up his name.

  • No, my last name (which will actually be the baby's last name) would make a terrible first name. DH's last name wouldn't make a very good name either, though it would sound closer to a "real" name than mine.?

That is actually one of our top 2 choices!

  • Our name would not be good -way too long. I have one in my poll (Larson.)

I also like Sawyer, Tyler, Taylor, Carter, Jameson, Taylor, Dempsey, Archer, Mason, Weston, Griffin...

Flynn is a family name from my side that I love for a middle name but I don't think I would use it as a first name, although I have seen people use it.

Great suggestion, but let's face it- not all surnames work.

I agree that some are silly to use, I guess I like more "occupational" names (Archer, Sawyer) as opposed to straight surnames. And some names that were originally surnames are totally acceptable now. Ryan, for example.

  • A teacher of mine named her youngest boy a sir name. While watching coverage of 9-11 she was pregnant and saw a firefigter's last name, and it followed the letter of her two other little boys (M) and so she went for it. I think its cool that there is a story behind it otherwise its a little weird I think. McCormick  although I'm not sure how she spelled it.

  • I'm a fan of the surname as a first name trend; we are naming our son Bauer. I also like Cullen, Gavin, and Paxton.
