TMI Boob question ladies....

So I haven't nursed A in about 10 days. It was going fine until yesterday. Both breasts have been tender, but yesterday the right one got visibly kind of a lot more swollen than the left. I barely slept at all last night because it was so painful and if I even brush up against it I get sick to my stomach because it hurts so bad. It is also lumpy and leaking.

I've been engorged and this is a lot more painful than that. No redness though.

Anyone know if this is normal for weaning?

Sorry if you were eating breakfast...

  • I'm not really sure but I will tell you drying up for me was one of the most painful experiences ever. Between the pain and having to get up to feed Gavin, I don't think I slept for 3 days straight. Ouch! I hope you get to feeling better.

  • One of my breasts got kind of like that after about the same amount of time. I didn't get sick to my stomach though. It took about 2 days to fix itself. I did encourage it to leak in a hot shower at night.
  • Can you do some manual expression to relive the pressure?

Here's some tips from Kelly Mom, idk if you've read them but maybe it will help.

  • Thanks ya'll.

The nurse is calling me in an antibiotic in case I develop flu like (mastitis) symptoms over the weekend and something for the pain.

She says I have to pump, which sounds like a form of torture, and then bind my boobs for a couple of days.

    This is really unpleasant.

I'm sorry love! It's painful! Right up until Avery's birth (a week or so between "weaning" DS) my boobs were like that. And baby Av never really got the colostrum, so my boobs were straight up clogged. Much better now! But I had to pump all last week and keep them super tight with a nursing sports bra with a wrap around it :/ I've just now been able to nurse her with no pain!

GL honey! and congrats on making it this far with bf Ainsley!

  • Yep, normal.  It happened to me about 2 weeks after I stopped nursing.  You don't need the antibiotics unless you have the mastitis symptoms, but if you don't mind taking them, it's no big deal.  I went to the doctor just to be sure.  They had had another patient recently who had mastitis, so they wanted to be sure.  They just told me to pump until it didn't hurt.  I only had to do it twice & then I was fine.  :)
