Sign language....introducing 'Please'

When you introduced the sign for "'Please" into your LO's repetoire, how did you go about it?

For instance, she knows the sign for milk so she can easily use it when she wants milk. But if I want to teach her to one day sign (and say) "please" do I teach her to sign both 'milk' and 'please' or just stay with one or the other?

Re: Sign language....introducing 'Please'

  • I would teach her to use the sign please first, and make sure she knows what it means, then you could try to teach her to put them together....Of course you doing it while saying it will help a lot too....

  • DD picked up her signs from daycare, but she does both more and then please (plus says 'pl'), so they can do more than one.
  • When he would point to something before I would give it to him I would sign please then help him sign please and then give it to him.  He learned that one really fast.  I agree with PP to teach just please first and then add the milk please later.

  • I'm a speech therapist- I think since she already signs for milk you can teach her to add please. After she signs for milk say "say please" and do the sign. Give her the milk even if she doesn't sign please. Do the please sign every time and soon she'll start doing it. You can start adding please to other signs too. She'll catch on- honestly though I wouldn't worry too much about please. Baby sign is to communicate basic needs. Please is complex and social and she won't really understand it for a while.
  • He would sign more or eat and we would add please to it.  He picked it up pretty quickly and now when he signs more or eat, we can say "what do you say" and he'll sign please.
  • DS picked it up much easier than we thought he would. We had been asking him to say please for awhile, but it clicked when I signed please and told him to do it by rubbing his tummy. It just clicked. Now he signs please for anything he wants but doesn't know how to verbalize.
