Swollen foot

My daughter got some sort of bug bite Monday night and it was only red around the bite. We put antihistamine cream on it that night. The next day when she woke up it was very swollen and I gave her Zyrtec and more anti-itch cream. Today it was just the same. I've put a call into her dr to see what he recommends to do. Has anyone had any experience with this? She hasn't even been itching it so I don't know why it's so swollen.?

Re: Swollen foot

  • Is it on the top or the sole of the foot?  How swollen is it?  Can you still see the bite?  Is the edge of the swollen area regular or irregular?

Any idea of the type of bug?

  • It's on the top of the foot, it's swollen enough that she can't fit her normal shoes on (not sneakers, more like sandal type of shoes). The red area covers the entire top of the foot to a little bit above her ankle. imageI can see the bite, it almost looks like there could be two little holes, but there's definitely one with something beside it. No idea on the bug- my sister had her outside and I noticed it later when they came back in.?

The nurse said since I can't get to the office (my husband has the car at work, he's army and can't leave) to go to Pediatric after hours care because I told her it's red and warm.?

  • I agree with the nurse that it's worth taking her in to the immediate care to be looked at.  My guess is that it's a bee sting or a spider bite -- more likely bee sting.  Who knows why she didn't cry much -- hard to tell with a toddler.

Sometimes bites on feet can swell more than on other places, in my Dr. Mommy experience.

It's good news that it hasn't gotten any bigger since yesterday and that your DD isn't scratching it.

In the meantime, you can put a cold compress on it to help bring the swelling down. Also, keep it elevated if possible (tough with a toddler, I know!)

Keep us posted!  I'd love to know what the immediate care center says about it.

  • Thanks for your advice. DH said he'd be on his way soon, but the place doesn't open until 5:45. When we get back I'll be sure to update you.?
  • We were at the pediatric place for less than 20 minutes. It was completely dead in there which was so nice! The lady said she's pretty sure it was infected and that she thought it was an ant bite (I'm not sure if I agree). But we got an oral antibiotic 2 x a day, and an ointment to kill bacteria over the area, 3 x a day. So I'm hoping it heals soon and the swelling goes away!
