How far in advance to send baby shower invites?

If they go out at the end of this week, they will be received 5 weeks before the shower.  Is that too far in advance?  My sister was thinking that it might be a good idea to send them out a little bit earlier because everyone's weekends tend to fill up fast in the summer.

Mine went out 3 weeks in advance.  I think 3 - 5 weeks is about the right time.  Send them out too soon - people may actually forget!

I sent mine out five weeks before with a 4 week deadline.  Most people RSVP'd within the time frame. Several didn't, which I had to hunt down - they had valid reasons - babysitting or work schedule issues - and one of them just never got hers in the mail.

we are sending ours out next week which will be 5 weeks also...

I work in retail and our schedule is posted 3 weeks in advance so all of my work friends need the time to request it off...and the other reason is exactly what you said - summer plans fill up fast!

I read that etiquette states 6 weeks in advance.  Mine were sent out about 5 weeks before.

mine were sent out pretty early too, because of summer.  I thought they could have waited a little longer because people may forget.

Mine were sent out about 3 weeks before the shower.....I was afraid of people forgetting, but half came and the other half had weddings and graduation parties.

Mine got sent out 3 weeks in advance and i'd say more then half can not make it. Either on Vacation, graduations parties or booked up for other reasons. I would say 4 weeks if better, if it lands around a holiday or you have guests who would travel get them out closer to 5 weeks.

My mom sent mine this week for my 8/16 shower so that's like 7 weeks! Everyone we know seems to be booked up every weekend through Labor Day so she wanted to get them out early.
