Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby Einstein?

What are your thoughts on Baby Einstein?  My 3 month old son just started to pay attention to the tv when it's on.  I was thinking of getting one of these videos.  Can anyone recommend a good one?

Re: Baby Einstein?

  • DS LOVES Baby Einstein. Right now we're watching "Baby Bach." He's been watching it since he was about 2 months old. It's so funny to watch and see which parts they like - he actually smiles and laughs at certain parts.

  • This is a good article on "educational videos" for babies.  I'd read and do a bit of research before investing in any of the videos.

  • DD has Baby Mozart and Baby Beethoven.  She loves them both.  And yes, like the pp said, it's funny to see her laugh at certain parts and get mad at other parts.

  • Many people don't agree, but I am all for it from time to time.  DD loves the bright colors and pictures, and at this age, that's all it is.  I don't think she's becoming "addicted" to the t.v.  She's a high needs baby, and I SAH.  Sometimes I need a break, and she loves to sit in her swing & watch the DVDs.

We have one called "Baby's First Moves" that she just loves.  It's full of pictures of babies and toddlers.

  • DD already likes the TV and loves the music from the movies, but since they dont recommend them until 3 mos so i dont want her to watch them yet..ill just play her the music on my computer

  • My DS loves the music ones, he bounces to them in his chair and they keep his attnetion for a while, all the colors are great too, 1 video a day isnt a bad thing at all.

  • I am anti-Baby Einstein.  I definitely would not buy them for "educational" value, but if you need something for occasional entertainment, then go for it.
  • The only one we have right now are baby's first signs.. I am a former sign language interpreter, and plan on teaching emma sign language.  The signs are all accurate.. The video is acually really cute. I found myself giggling to a couple of parts of it. I thnk we have put the movie in about 4 or 5 times total, and never have played it from begining to end.. I think its too long for her right now

    this.

and i think the article above was great, especially this:
"At the very best, they steal time from much more productive cognitive developmental activities," he said. "Ultimately, what it's about is to make parents not feel guilty about an electronic baby sitter."

  • my older dd started watching baby einstein around 9 months. She loved baby's first signs, baby's first moves, & baby's favorite places the best.

She knows all the signs from the signing dvd & she would laugh whenever the puppets would come on. I think these dvds are great and I'm happy I bought them.

I think if all your baby/kid did was watch tv then that would be mind-numbing but if you are very interactive with your dd during/before/after watching a dvd I don't think you should have a problem. For example, my dd would see a cat on the dvd...I would show her our IRL cat. She would laugh because she could see the correlation & then call every cat a cat from then on.

I haven't let my younger dd watch any dvds yet...maybe when she is older.

  • Don't buy them! You can play them for free on youtube!  Occasionally, I will put my laptop out a few feet in front of DD while she's doing tummy time and she LOVES watching the Baby Beethoven video. I don't like to do it very often, but it's a nice thing to switch it up every now and again.
  • We have Baby Beethoven and Baby Mozart.  At first, I was hesitant to get the videos, but after I saw them, I was glad I bought them.  They have puppets, colorful pictures and toys while classical music is playing in the background.  I only work on occasion, so I'm pretty much a SAHM.  I interact with my DS all day every day, so these videos give me a 1/2 hour break to get stuff done.  DS doesn't watch them everyday-maybe a few times a week which, IMO, is not so bad.  He really reacts to the images on screen and will laugh and shout at the tv.  In moderation, I think they are fine.
