Nurseries and Baby Gear

Did you paint your own "alphabet letters"?

I'm thinking this is a good DH project to get involved with the nursery decorating.

1) Where did you buy the unfinished letters?

2) What size (length) were they? 6" seems to be common?

3) Did you drill holes in them before you painted? (for the ribbon)

4) What type of paint did you use? I was thinking of using a spray paint and then  some paint with a brush to add some designs to the letters

5) Did you spray anything over the finished letter to give it is shine or laquer finish?

Re: Did you paint your own "alphabet letters"?

  • I just started painting mine this week...

I shopped Joanns (big selection of styles), Michaels, Pat Catans, BRU, and a dozen or so on-line vendors for letters. I ended up going with 9" pre-primed / pre-drilled ones from Michaels for $2.99 each (and I used a bunch of coupons to save even more)

I'm using acrylic paint and I can already tell they are going to need several coats due to the brush marks. I'm already thinking spray paint would have been much better but I'm doing each letter a different color so I guess I was trying to save $$ since I'm only using a little bit on each one.  I didn't think of clear coat after but that's a great idea - and I will definatley use a spray!

  • My mom painted ours. We bought them at Michaels - they were white and I think about 9 inches long as well. The back of the letters has a place to hang them so I thought about hanging them by a nail and then attaching a ribbon with a glue gun for "show". She used acyrlic paint to paint them.

  • I purchased mine at Joann's (to impatient to use coupons, lol).

I'm spraying painting them chocolate brown and using a glue gun to attach the ribbon to hang them with.

  • I got mine at Hobby Lobby.  The have precut holes in back to hang them on a nail, but I may hang them with ribbon (attached with a glue gun).  They were $2.99 each, but on sale for 50% off.  I may paint them or cover with scrapbook paper/mod podge and just paint the edges to match.

  • i have gotten some at Joann Fabric in the past. They were about 10" tall, the paper mache ones. They worked best with spray paint, because so much paint gets absorbed. It becomes almost a matte finish. I would get the wood ones if you want a glossier more smooth finish. I have mine resting on a windowsill. For the nursery, i think i am just going to get one large letter and stand it on a shelf.
