lemen

Did you notice the tummy rumbles after starting lactulose, or before? Lactulose draws water into the bowel and can be pretty powerful stuff, so that could definitely have something to do with it. Or maybe the combo of both meds. Or the increased Eryped. Who knows. =p

Keep me posted on what the doc says tomorrow.

I really hope he can start feeling better soon. :(

As for the waiting...time is slowly moving, but at least it's moving. Work and school are helping to keep me busy. ;)

Re: lemen

  • UGH.  I am SO frustrated right now I want to cry!!!

I didn't notice tummy rumbles before the luctulose - - but he's had a steady decline in the amount of calories he's willing to eat in the last 2 weeks....so I think you're right in that it could be a combo of the eryped + lactulose.

I just don't understand how the eryped was working and now it's not.  In retrospect - I don't think it was the eryped per say that made him do so well that week, but the fact that when he first started the eryped he was stooling 1-3 x per day!  He hasn't stooled in 4 days. He will not freaking go.  I think maybe he just fights it.  :( He is so uncomfortable.  If he doesn't go by lunch time I'm going to have to chip him.  I didn't want to because they say that makes a stooling problem worse long-term, and I want to see if the lactulose will work, but he just can't wait any longer.

I did call the doctor yesterday.  She said to give the eryped/lactulose until wed.  If he isn't better, then we'll change course.  They explained that lactulose is a laxative (like you said) and that miralax is a stool softener, and they could try miralax.  I wish we would have tried that first.  They said they use it more often and the doctors orders were he could try either (I'm not sure how/why we ended up with lactulose - I think it's random I guess.)

A hardly ate at all yesterday.  He couldn't really sleep either. He was up like 4 hours yesterday evening. So tired. So fussy.  FInally got him to sleep.  Then he slept all night and went 12 hours without eating, which is fine, but his diaper was dry and I'm starting to worry he's going to get dehydrated if he doesn't eat something.

When will this hell ever end?

Glad you are keeping busy :) I hate waiting!!!!! haha!

  • Glycerin, lactulose, and miralax are actually all in the same class of laxatives - hyperosmotic laxatives, aka, they pull water into the intestines and that stimulates the intestines to move, and can also make the stool pass more easily since it contains more water. Might just be a difference of semantics, I suppose.

    Does his belly get distended/hard?

How many days has he been on lactulose now? It can take a couple days to work, but it seems like he's been on it that long already.

    I'm sorry. :(

...I have to run to school, so I will answer you NICU question later. Mbs might actually know even better since she's a NICU nurse.

  • It gets sort of hard but I don't know if it's considered distended...we more worry just since he stops eating and gets uncomfortable for days :(

He's been on lactulose for probably 3 days. This si the 4th day-
