3rd Trimester

A/C and a newborn

I always sleep with the A/C in the summertime but my room does get kind of cold. I was figuring on putting her PNP on the other side of the bed (opposite ac) and making sure she had on a warm sleep sack etc. I was wondering what everyone else was doing/thinking.

  • If it is really hot, we will use a/c, not super high though. I will put the bassinet on the opposite end of the room of the a/c, too.

I'm assuming you have a window unit?

We have central air with ceiling vents so the air circulates well in the room so it doesn't matter where she'll be.

In your case, I think your on the right track to not put the lo right next to the unit.

  • We will be running the A/C, but oddly the recommendations I've seen is that baby's room is as cool as 65 to reduce sids risks.  I THINK I read that in the Dr. Spock book... but they definitely wanted baby's room cooler, so no worries!

  • We like to keep our house at 68 to 70 degrees during the summer....I think at night low 70's is a good temp for babies to sleep in.

  • We have central air and we don't leave it too low because we're cheap!  It's usually set at 77-78 so I think that will be fine for baby.  We also have 5 ceiling fans throughout our house, so that helps.

If you're talking about having a window unit, I'd definitely put baby's PNP on the opposite side of the room.

  • That's what we're doing.  We have a window unit and have it in the window opposite to where he'll be sleeping.
  • I keep my house frigid! I'll probably just swaddle with a thicker blanket or put her in a fleece sleep sac.

We keep our a/c set about 69 degrees right now and have our ceiling fans going on medium/high. LO will be sleeping in her crib in her room from night 1, so we will keep her fan on low just to keep the air circulating and put her in a sleep sack.

I read this, too.  They even make little temp readers to notify you if the temp in the room gets above 72 degrees.

I'm not saying to point the AC directly at the baby, but I wouldn't worry about keeping the room cool.

  • I read in a baby book once that babies are often overdressed. You should dress a baby like you are dressed, for a newborn obviously swaddling is great, and a cotton blanket swaddled will keep baby toasty, ad a cotton hat and your good. You can tell if the baby is cold by feeling arms/feet etc. Just don't place her near the A/C vent and try not to overdress yourself.

We keep our A/C at 70 during the night time and swaddle her in a muslin blanket with only a diaper on and she is not too cold.

  • Babies are often overdressed. What we teach at our hosptial is to keep the house comfortable for you, to dress the baby in one extra layer. So keep the A/C on, then dress the baby in a cotton outfit & swaddle, this is an extra layer.

  • It is fukcing hot here in the summertime and a/c is an absolute necessity.  DH once left for the weekend (I was also out of town) and turned the a/c off completely.  When he got back 2 days later it was 95 degrees inside.  Candles had melted.  Gross.  Anyway, we generally keep it at 76 but I'll probably turn it down to 74 or 75 once the baby arrives.

  • they say overheating is more of a concern than them being too cold. i have heard that the room should be comfortable for a lightly dressed adult to be in and feel fine. keeping the blinds closed helps keep it cooler, and ceiling fans are good too. doing that, so far, we haven't needed to turn on our AC and it's been in the high 80s many days.
  • We would melt without A/C.  The heat factor here is 110 degrees today. The baby will sleep in our room, most likely in a onesie and swaddled in a light blanket. A light-weight sleep sack would be fine too.  Remember, unless there are medical issues, dressing a baby as you or DH wold is appropriate.

I say that, but at the same time, you will most likely be expeiencing major hot flashes after you deliver.  I made DH sleep with the windows and sliding doors open in January - (30-40 degree temps outside) because I was so hot.

  • I still plan on using our A/C ~ I may not set it as high as I have it now, or normally would in the summer, but our house faces the east and west(as far as sunlight goes), so we would melt without it. On days/evenings where it's not soo hot then we will open the windows, but I would like for all of us to be comfortable in the heat.
