3rd Trimester

Has anyone been to PT for lower back pain?

I called my Dr about my lower back pain and she is sending me to PT. My first appointment is today and I am not sure what to expect.

I haven't been to a PT, but have been seeing a chiropractor reguarly and it has helped a lot.  GL at the PTs and I suggest the chiropractic route if you need any more help.

  • I did earlier in pregnancy.  It consisted of doing some exercises to stretch and strengthen the weak muscles in my lower back.  G/L!

I have chronic lower back problems (when not pregnant) and my PT is a life saver. S/he will probably show you safe exercises you can do on a daily basis as well as manually work your back and exercise with you while you're there. IMO, it's a much better route than going to a chiropractor.

  • I am a PT and hope you find this helpful!  They'll probably give you some stretches and exercises, maybe some pain modalities (like ultrasound/TENS/heatpack or whatever you think is comfortable), postural education (liek you don't know!), positioning tips, etc.  PT's learn manipulations (like chiropractors) but prob. won't do it b/c you're pregnant.  Also, if they have a massage therapist on staff they'll hook you up with that too!

  • I have been going to PT since I was 14 weeks. I go twice a week and it has really helped but only if I do the exercises.  Chances are, they will tell you that you need to exercise your legs to get your back to stop hurting.  It's b/c everything is connected, and they do a lot of rubbing and basic things to really get the pressure to come off the back, but it only really works if you practice at home.  When I don't, it is always worse.  I also have a lot of rib pain which is associated with the legs...it's weird and doesn't really make a lot of sense.  He probably won't do a LOT today but he'll have you walk and work with you on some things to do at home.

Mine's also a chiropractor so he always adjusts me while I am there and I usually am sore for a day and feel great for three days and then back to PT I go :).
