Who can I write to about my hatred for not having mandated IF coverage in all the states? Im really sick of the fact that because I dont live in a state with mandated coverage that I have to come out of pocket 16k for IVF. Thanks ladies!
I live in Illinois, a state that is supposed to have mandated coverage. HOWEVER, there are many loopholes to this mandate. I work full time (at a hospital of all places) and they do NOT offer infertility coverage (with the exception of some diagnostic tests). I found out that any company that is "self insured" does not have to offer IF coverage in IL. I think around 50% or more of companies are "self insured". Here is a link for what that means:
I wrote a letter to the administrators at my work providing good information on why IF coverage is important and can actually decrease healthcare costs. I did not even receive a reply back from them.
I'm sorry that you have to go through this. But please know that just because you live or work in a mandated coverage state does not mean automatic IF coverage unfortunately. (Not to discourage you from trying to get the laws changed though). When I found out that IVF was our only option for getting PG I was thrilled that we happened to live in IL, only to find out that my company found the loophole to get out of it.
I too live in Illinois and my DH's company is self insured, however they do have some coverage for IF- $20,000 lifetime for procedures and $7000 for meds. I am hoping that I don't have to use all of the coverage. We are just starting our journey and I am overwhelmed with everything.
But to answer your question, I would say try your representative and senators.
No, we dont have IF coverage and will problably go broke doing this - but if we ever need a "penile implant" or need Viagra - I believe thats covered.

I am also in a mandated state that fell in the cracks of the self insured loophole. It sucks!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I also work in a mandated state - but have no coverage d/t the self insured loophole.
I think it's disgusting... DH could get viagra, but we can't get pregnant.
