Beatrice

Okay, I like old-fashioned names, and also British-sounding names (yes, I know Beatrice is originally French). I was really into Charlotte but I'm hearing it a lot where I am, and popularity/trendiness matters to me.

Anyway, I was never really into the name Beatrice but as of recently I just really like it. It's my grandmother's name, and in short--she was the most amazing woman I've ever known.

So, I'm just wondering, what do you think when you hear Beatrice? If you don't like old-sounding names, then just say so. But in the context of the other old names coming back, like Eloise, Eleanor, Lillian, Ada, etc....what do you think?

Possible NNs could be BeBe, Bea, Bess or Tricia (which Tricia is my mom's name actually).

  • I like the name, but can't picture a little girl going by the full name.  I like call her Tricia.

  • I love it.

Truth be told, I sort of regret not having named DD Beatrice.  It was my grandmother's name, too.  And, although we considered it, we decided against it in favor of a name we both liked more.  In retrospect, I really wish we'd gone with the name that was more meaningful (though I do love DD's name!).

Of the nns, I like Bebe and Trish or Tricia.

  • I love it

eta: I like Bebe or Bea as well

  • I like the way it sounds, but I don't like the way it looks (I know, I'm *so* helpful).

I love the nns you have picked out, though!

  • I love old names, but I'm not crazy about Beatrice... I think because of Princess Beatrice, who is kind of unattractive. I think Bess is a really adorable nickname though -- reminds me of Nancy Drew's best friend!
  • I LOVE it. I think of Beatrix Potter and also a woman I know named Beatrice (who is really cool). I love the connection with your grandma and I think the nn Bea is the cutest thing ever.

Me neither. My mom has a friend named Beatrice and I've always thought it sounded like an old woman name, but not like a stylish old womans' name like Charlotte, Lillian, Claire, etc... Does that make sense? I just can't see this name coming back in fashion.?

I really like Alice on your name list. THAT name is exactly what I'm talking about. It's a stylish older name that is great and doesn't sound like a women in a nursing home. Lucy is another suggestion that fits that image.

  • I like Beatrice, but like Beatrix better.  However, because of the family connection, would feel obligated to use Beatrice.

For nn, I'd go with Tricia to honor your mom too.

  • I think it's really cute.  I really like the nn Bea---I'm not a fan of Tricia, because it's not my style and because it would be really confusing in my life to have my baby and my mom have the same name !:)  but beatrice and the other nn's are great!

Me too and I actually prefer Beatrix. I like the others you suggested too-Eleanor esp.

  • I like it...its different without being "out there"...pretty!
  • I like older/ traditional names but I do not like Beatrice.  it sounds VERY "old lady" to me.

  • I LOVE it.  I think it's very much in the same line as Eloise, Eleanor, etc.  All the names I like are "old lady" names, though.

From your list, I also adore Maeve and Alice.
  • I like it... I like the 'older' names!

Just remember, your daughter will go through a phase of HATING you for naming her an 'old lady' name... trust me... my parents named me Esther.... the pinicle of old lady names!

  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts! We find out the gender next week, and that's when the fun really begins. :)
  • I don't like it at all.... and I'm big fan of old-lady/baby girl names.  ;)
  • Disclaimer: I don't typically like "grandma-esque" names (e.g., Eleanor, Norma, Louise, etc), but Beatrice is probably one of my favorites in the old-fashioned category. It's elegant, and it's uncommon without being unusual. And it doesn't make me think "pool little girl with old lady name!" haha. I give it a Yes

The nn Bea is really cute!

  • p.s. Just looked at your name list. I LOVE the name Grant Wheeler if you have a boy! Very classic.
  • I LOVE the name Beatrice.

I do like old fashioned names (I'm naming my daughter Abigail), but I don't think Beatrice is horribly old fashioned at all.  Certainly not as bad as Margaret or Irene, both names I really liked but DH refused to consider.

I like just Bea as a nickname.  I've never heard of Bess as a nickname for Beatrice, but I like that too.

I don't care for Bebe or Tricia.  Bebe just seems a bit silly (although, if it were only used when speaking, not written, I might like it okay).  Tricia just seems very middle aged mom to me -- probably because all the Tricia's I know are in their 50's or 60's!
