Does anyone's daughter have a labial adhesion? The pedi discovered my daughter's labias are partially fused during her 9 month visit. Since then I've noticed they've fused even further up and there's now just a small opening below her clitoris.
Did you Dr. prescribe estrogen cream? Our Dr. said she'd rather not, because even though they may seperate, they will probably just go back together once we stop using the cream.
I'm just worried about urination problems and infections, especially after googling tonight, haha! Thanks for any replies.
Re: labial adhesion?
DD had this. I highly recommend AGAINST the cream. I researched it a bunch, and it is the exact same thing they give to post menopausal women. Not appropriate for an infant, IMO. It also is linked to breast cancer. And it is true that the chances of it sticking back together are pretty high. My pedi said we could do the cream, and if she started getting breast buds and/or vaginal bleeding, we could stop. Um, no thanks.
We applied vaseline to the adhesion every single time we changed her diaper. It worked! She was about 80% closed up and now she is about 10%or less.
Also, as long as she isn't getting UTIs, it's really no big deal. By the age of 2, they start producing enough estrogen of their own for it to open up on its own, if it hasn't yet. GL!
I was told the exact same thing...no cream! Our pedi discovered it at her 4 mo. check up and he wanted to give it time and said it would most likely take care of itself.
At her 6 mo check up, a different pedi in the same practice said everything that the other dr. said (which is exactly what the PP says above!) but thisd pedi said she could tell that the adhesion was very thin and that she could easily separate it with a q-tip and vaseline with no pain right then and there. I was so very hesitant and nervous but she reassured me numerous times that it would be okay and she wouldn't recommend doing it if it would be painful for DD. After she did it there was a teeny, tiny light, light pink on the q-tip and DD didn't flinch. She told me to run a q-tip with vaseline in that area once a day to prevent it from reattaching, which it so often does.
I, like you I'm sure, was very nervous when I first heard about DD having this but have come to find that it's very common after chatting with family and friends. Don't worry!
My goddaughter had this. (She's 11 now, apparently with perfectly healthy labia.) They did prescribe the cream for her. I think after they were done with the cream, they were just told to put plenty of A&D-type ointment on her to keep things from getting stuck together.
She also started growing some (really fine, thin) pubic hair from the estrogen cream. It seemed a little ridiculous - this infant with pubic hair.
