Baby Names

Calliope

How do you/would you pronounce this name?  I know there's a "right" way, I'm just curious what most people would think.  I HATED it when I thought I knew how to pronounce it, then loved it when I learned I was wrong and was told the real pronunciation.  DH said it's growing on him, but he's worried it will always be pronounced wrong.  I'm worried about this too so I wanted to see what you thought...

(PS I love unique names, as in not many other children have that as a name.  Not a big fan of traditional, classic, or popular names.  I figured this was pretty "normal" and not too weird.)

Re: Calliope

  • I probably pronounce it wrong. I read it as "Calli-O-pea"

Yeah, that's technically wrong (though I'm sure people pronounce it that way).  That's how I was saying it originally and didn't like.

    Blank!
  • damn, Im an idiot. I just looked it up Kah-lie-a-pea.  Beautiful name when pronounced correctly.

I didn't realize you had your baby already!  Congrats!

This is how I thought it was pronounced until a post on here set me straight about it, plus Grey's Anatomy.  I pronounce it now Cuh-lie-uh-pea.  Sorry I'm not good at figuring out how to type it phonetically.  I really like it though.

Thanks, she's already three weeks... time flies with a newborn! It's crazy.

Love Calliope now that I know how to pronounce. (Sidenote: Love Evangeline too!)

Haha, this was when I started liking the name!

DH and I both love Callie, but our last name is Riley and we thought we should probably come up with a longer name and just NN her Callie.  Calliope was always suggested but I didn't like Ca-Lee-Oh-Pay.  But when I heard it on Grey's I REALLY liked it!

  • I heard this name for the first time a few years ago when I had a student by that name. She spells it Kalliope, though. I wasn't sure about it at first, but it has since grown on me. I like using Callie as a nn.

  • I just wanted to add that Cah-lee-oh-pee is the Italian pronunciation.  So that is correct!  However, I don't like that.  I like Kah-lie-oh-pay (pay is sort of between pee and pay, not exactly pay... I'm not sure how to spell that out).
  • It is such a pretty name but I can't ever think of anything but the book Middlesex when I see/hear it.  Great book, though!  Just not a character I would name my baby after Stick out tongue

I have yet to read this and now I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't.  :)  Is she slutty?

Well, it's kind of a crazy book.  The main character (Calliope) is inbred, and intersexed.  S/he goes through a lot of crazy things, and later decides to live life as a man (Cal).  It's a good story, and really enlightening, but like I said, that's my only association with the name so it's what I think of when I see it.

  • I think it's cute and has a great nickname.  I would pronounce it kay-LIE-uh-pee.  I'm not sure if I knew the correct pronunciation before grey's anatomy, though! :)
  • I would pronounce it how you originally thought (ca-lee-oh-pee) b/c DH is Greek and that is how they pronounce it.  I do like the pronunciation you have mentioned, though.  Another nickname is "Kay."

Thanks!  I remember when you first posted about using the name Adelaide, which I absolutely love.  It was a nice surprise to actually see her in your sig.  You have two beautiful girls.

  • Without reading any other posts, I'd pronounce it Callie-OPE. (like the sound of open) No matter how it's said, it's awful to me.
  • It's pretty, different, but pretty...

Ka- LIE- oh- pea. It can also be correctly spelled Kalliope, but, I'm not sure it will help the public with pronunciation.

I love the name, it has a beautiful history in Greek mythology. I was annoyed when they named the Grey's character that- it doesn't fit her at all in my mind.

This is the pronunciation I've heard and like.

there is a street in NOLA with the name and is prnounced as above. But I say cal-eye-oh-pee
  • I love this name, too--if we have a girl, there's a good chance she'll be a Callie (Calliope or Callista).  It's a Greek name--in mythology, she was one of the muses.  The Greek pronounciation is Cah-lie-oh-pea.

That's the pronunciation I like.  I think it's beautiful, but also think of Middle Sex.

  • I like the name, but it makes me think of Middlesex. Although Callie/Cal was a nice character, but obviously changed genders so there's that....

It's really bad. Sorry. I'd pronounce it Cal-e-o-pee.?
  • This is one of my favorite names. I like the pronunciation ca-lie-o- pee, like the instrument.?
  • Kuh-LYE-oh-pee
  • the Greek pronunciation is best.  I've liked it since Days of Our Lives character Calliope Bradford was on air 20 years ago.

It is also some sort of circus thing, like a carousel or something...
