Baby Names

We are naming our baby boy Jovanni...any thoughts?

We have decided on the name Jovanni Manuel.  We are not Italian so we didn't want to use Jiovanni, however, since we loved the name we went with Jovanni since that seemed to be the more popular use by Latinos.  I am still partially on the fence with the name.  Any other opinions or thoughts?

It's NMS, but there isn't anything wrong with it.?
  • I think it has a nice sound to it...is it a traditionally Latino name?

i don't like it...however, i do like giovanni - i think the name giovanni works best with someone who is italian (or at least looks italian...darker features).
  • No it's not at all.  It is originally an Italian name.  I work for a company that takes the newborn pics at the hospitals so I have access to a HUGE name database.  I looked up that name and out of like 500, 450 of them were hispanic.  My husband is Hispanic so since I got to name my daughter I let him pick a name for this baby and we decided to go with Jovanni.
  • It's NMS, but I like how it sounds.

  • I love the name, but I would use the traditional spelling. It's the same name either way and will sound Italian no matter what. You might as well spell it normally.

  • How would it be pronounced? It seems to me the Hispanic pronunciation would be "Ho-vanni," not Giovanni.

Is that an actual spelling variation? I think it looks weird, sorry.

  • J's in Spanish make the "h" sound. Ho-vanni.

  • I like it.  I think I like Giovanni better, but Jovanni works, too.  And honestly, I think you two found a name you both like and shouldn't put too much stalk into what a bunch of online strangers think.
  • Isn't there some old cologne called Jovanni Musk? Maybe I have the name wrong, but that's what it makes me think of. Which in turn makes me think of sweaty, hairy men in tight pants trying to pick up girls half their age at nightclubs.?

I love the name Giovanni, but it is very Italian. Jovanni actually looks made up to me, and I agree, I'd pronounce it Ho-vanni if I knew it was meant to be a Hispanic name. ?

  • I think it's cute!
  • Well, I'm not crazy about the spelling but at least people would pronounce it correctly. "gio" in italian is pronounced "jo" NOT "geeo" it drives me nuts when people pronounce it wrong.
  • well think its a beutiful name because i named my my baby jovanni too & i spelled it that way because im also latin and so is the father and in spanish its sounds diffrent like with a y meaning the j but i like it and so do my friends .
