2nd Trimester

Bottle types?

I'm being forced to think about registering earlier than I want, because I'll only see my family once before the baby's born and it's coming up in a month (we live 1600 miles apart), so the pressure's on to get cracking on the registry.

Since I can only do the gender-neutral stuff for now, I've been thinking/reading about bottles... I plan to pump at work so will need lots to leave for daycare.

I've read lots of reviews, in Baby Bargains and elsewhere, but nowhere seems to discuss the pros and cons of drop-in vs.  normal bottles.

What are you all planning on using, and why?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Re: Bottle types?

  • I am BF but DH wants bottles around so he can feed too- I let him choose them since he will use them most.  He chose the medical grade all-silicone Prince Lionheart bottles.  They are neat and sqooshy and burp the air bubbles out.  They are more expensive though.

  • From personal experience I can tell you that you may want to get several different kinds to see what baby likes.  You never know what a baby will prefer.  My DD would only take Avent.  She hated Platex ventair, Soothie, and a couple others we tried.  DS wouldn't take one at all.

Also, if you're planning on BFing and pumping, wide neck bottles are better because the nipple is bigger resembling the breast more.

  • We're planning on using Evenflo or Munchkin glass bottles. We prefer glass everything over plastic, so it just seems like the right choice for us environmentally. They don't cost much more than plastic bottles. They can go straight into the dishwasher to be cleaned and sanitized.

I'm not sure how good they are at reducing colic, though.

DH and I were totally with you on glass for the green aspect and really thought about going that route.  If you have to do daycare just make sure that they will accept these- most wont or they have restrictions.  It would stink to buy a bunch and then have to change b/c of daycare rules!

  • Definately drop-ins... There are several reasons I used them with DD and we will use them again for DS... 1) the air can be removed so there is less chance of baby injesting it 2) empties more like the breast with specific suction so if you are going back and forth it causes less coughing from getting too much 3) cleaning bottles sucks! all you have to do is clean the nipple really 4) BM storage bags fit into the bottle so you don't have to worry about pouring it or anything...
  • I plan on pumping as well because I will be returning to work.  I will be using the drop-in bottles because they provide easy clean up and my sister used them with my niece and she hardly ever had gas.  It may be a little more expensive to constantly buy drop-ins, but the relief of my baby is much more important :)!  And they are BHA free!
  • Dropin they work the best bpa free not as hard to clean and disinfect. ?Just great overall!

  • I use my medela ones whille bf but then Dr. Browns. You will go through a bunch so dont get alot of one kind, wait. I used avent, which were okay, drop-ins are nice cause you dont have to clean much but it sucks cause air gets in there. vent-aires are horrible. The angle is hard for a baby to learn how to hold because if they hold it the wrong way nothing comes out, the numbers erase after a week and they leak. I havent had any problems with Dr. browns and I will use them again :) GL

  • My DD uses Playtex drop ins at daycare.  I BF and pump at work and pump into the small Medela bottles and then transfer the milk into the Playtex bottles at night and the extra milk goes into the freezer.
