Car troubles

I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but anyway... DH and I went camping this past weekend and 60 miles from home our "reliable" car completely died - engine failure.  After being towed back home to a shop, none of our friends we called answered and we had to walk 3 miles home.  To top it all off, our "less than reliable" car needed $600 to get it in better shape.  So now we're down to one car and DH is being a tightwad and goes back and forth btw not wanting to buy another car and wanting to buy a small older car with high miles.  I keep reminding him that we need a reliable family size car... is that too much to ask?
