Side effects? I am unaware of any side effects except possible nausea. Taking them with food (especially carbs) helps with that. I take the target brand and don't have any problems as long as I take them right after I eat.

I use to take mine in the morning with breakfast (before I was pregnant) but they made me nauseas. So now I take them with dinner and haven't had any problems. They can make your pee a brighter yellow as pp mentioned as well. Other than that there really aren't other side effects.
I'm using samples that I got from my ob.. The first kind did make me constipated and I'm NEVER constipated. And burpy. The ones I'm taking now I haven't had any problems with. In the next week or so I'll be out of samples.....do most of you take otc ones or prescription??
I started taking mine before I was pregnant and never noticed any side effects.
me too! 2 months before we tried. i'd read that the iron amount causes nausea and constipation but never experienced it. i take the ones from trader joes.
Popping over from 3rd trimester. Boards a little slow. Yes some people do struggle with prenatals. I did. Lot's of constipation and stomache issues. My Dr had me Switch to the Flinstone chewable and those worked out great for me and tasted great. Same amount of folic acid as prenatals which is what's most important. Alot of ladies on these boards had issues with prenatals so switched to the chewable kids vitamins. Most commonly Flinstones.

I haven't had any side effects except if I take them when I am naseous it triggers my gag reflex really easily- I asked my Dr. and she gave me a prescription so they would be coated to make them easier to swallow and have no taste to them. They are sooo much easier to take now! Plus my insurance covers these b/c they are prescription so I pay nothing vs. paying for the generic versions now- that was a nice surprise!

Just make sure you take with food (or else you will have an upset tummy) and may cause constipation (due to the high iron content).
Just make sure you drink plenty of water and high fiber foods. Also - if you need later on... we are allowed to take stool softners... just ask your doc for a script or a recomendation.
I was having a hard time swallowing my prenatals (never had issues with swallowing pills pre-pregnancy) so I am now using chewable prenatals. My doctor gave me a prescription.

The consitpation is usually noticed later on when all your organs begin to get squished making it harder to completely empty your bowel. This inturn means that the remainder [poop] stays inside longer making it harder in texture and then harder to pass... it's a vicious cycle.... and we are all in for it... LOL
i take otc ones...i'm fine today with the exception of a mild headache, which i haven't gotten since finding out i was preggers. at the suggestion of my sister, i took it at night because she said she suffered a bit from constipation, also. thanks for the advice!

Re: prenatal vitamins and side effects
Our family blog
The first PNV I tried was a prescription - PreNate Elite - and it gave me unbearable heartburn for hours.
I switched to GNC's PNV's plus a DHA Supplement (Enfamil) and take them both with a meal. No side effects at all.
