teething and sleep

my ds FINALLY got his first tooth and sleep is once again messed up.  we had figured out a good routine and he was able to put himself to sleep for naps and bedtime now I feel like we are back to nursing to sleep and 4x's/night up.

any advice to give to get through this bump??    my dh says to let him cry and I cant do that but then I feel like we are just reverting back to what we tried so hard to stop.  if your lo was already putting themselves to sleep, what did you do when they were getting a tooth?

also, how long does it usually take for a tooth to come in and be painful?

Re: teething and sleep

  • I give K Motrin and two teething tablets before bedtime.  It seems to help a lot.  She'll wake up ocassionally but she puts herself back to sleep within a minute or two.  Typically, I can see the tooth under the gum and about three to four days later it will pop though and she'll be back to her normal self.

It's not fun.  I feel your pain.  Good luck.  But yay for Sam, getting a tooth!

  • we either do Tylenol or Motrin depending on how fussy he seems to be.  And it takes Max anywhere from 1-3 weeks to get back to normal.  The top center took the longest and seemed to bother him the most...once they actually break through we're on the home stretch...HTH!

  • My dd is teething right now too.  With her first two teeth, it was only a few days to come and seem more like herself again.  Now, she has been working on cutting 6 teeth for probably at least 3 weeks now.  Only two have come all the way through the gums and so she is still working on 4 more which are taking forever and a day to come through.  So I think there is no set amount of time for the teeth to come in and be painful.  Unfortunately I don't have any really good advice for you.  We try using teething tablets and motrin or tylenol, but she still wakes up and seems like she's in pain during the night.  I know we are getting bad habits during this time but there is no way I could just let her cry while she teething and hurting.  I'm planning on doing some sleep training once I know this teething is done (which at this rate, could be a few more weeks.. : / )  Good luck.
