DS dx with Apraxia (new here)

Hello Everyone! My son Ryder is 25 Months and very behind in his speech. When we went for his 2 year physical the Dr gave us a referral for speech therapy which i knew was coming and i was wanting to get going. DS says about 9 words somewhat clearly but understands everything your are talking about it amazes me some of the things he understands its Crazy! Well we went for this speech eval. last week and the therapist dx him with mild speech apraxia and has us coming once a week for 45 min. So my question you other mom with speech delays or apraxia kids is how long before you noticed a decent difference in your childs speech and how long have they been or had therapy? Thanks ladies

Re: DS dx with Apraxia (new here)

  • Mine was not diagnosed with apraxia and he didn't even qualify for early intervention when I got him evaluated based on the percentages they need for the child to qualify.  However, I knew he needed it so I went through insurance and even his therapist said he needed it.  He had many many words and you could understand them (he was 2 at the time) but not many sounds or two word syllables.  I would say within 6 months I noticed a HUGE difference.  I mean I seen some progress within the first 2 or 3 months but to really notice, it took about 6 months.  He is 3.5 now and does not need Summer service and is doing great.  It's more for articulation now (prouncing F's etc.).  Good luck.  I'm sure he will be just fine.  It's great you are doing it now.

  • My 4 yo son was dx with severe Apraxia @ 3. He had about 10 intelligible words and poor oral muscle strength. He did not say Mommy until 3.9 and is at about the level of a 3 yo in his speech at the moment, but I will tell you that with intensive therapy his progress was quick and amazing. Aparaxia is a difficult dx to make at such a young age and some may reply that it is almost impossible to make such a dx @ 25 months. T's dx is actually in question because he has made such much progress in so little time! Good luck! Check out my blog - It has been a difficult, but rewarding journey for us.
  • We are in ST with a working diagnosis of apraxia though my son just turned 2 so it's a little early for a formal diagnosis. 3 months ago he had no words, was babbling /b/ and /m/ sounds and had a few signs. We started therapy in February and just in the last couple of months we have seen signficant improvement. He has about 30 word/word approximations and is starting to put 2 words together. He can do all of the vowels and his sounds have expanded from the two originas to b,d,t,n,m,v,p and occasionally a g sound. ?He too has no problems with receptive language. ?Each day it seems he's trying new things which is amazing. He said mommy and daddy the night before his 2nd birthday.

?My husband and I aren't sure if it's the therapy or just my son finally deciding he wanted to talk. ?In any case, we are continuing therapy. Currently his therapy sessions aren't too productive b/c he loses focus quickly and when he gets frustrated with a word he shuts down but we're pushing through.

good luck with getting things started! ?I have learned that this can be a slow process but when you see success it is awesome! ?Look forward to hearing about your progress.?

  • Welcome to the board! DS#1 has a working dx of Apraxia (pending evaluation with developmental pediatrician in February).  He began speech therapy with a speech instructor at age 2.  Approximately 3 months in we switched to a speech language pathologist.  Once we switched we noticed an increase in his ability to sign and begin to try new sounds.  DS receives speech through early intervention one time per week and through private speech one time per week (so total 2xper week).

Honestly if DS had said 9 words at age 2 I would have been thrilled!  At that time he said ma and ba (often for dada).  Now at 33 months old he says mama, dada, daddy (on occassion), bye bye, ball, no and two.  I'm not sure if strangers would recognize these words but I can.  He also tries other sounds including g/d/m/b/o.  He has approximately 75-100 signs that he uses to express his needs.  Like your child, his receptive language is amazing.

    Best of luck and welcome!
