I have a Grimm Fairy Tale book from when I was a kid. They all end in death. Seriously.
Momma to three boys:
Henry - 4yo
Alex - 18mo
Jack - born 2/23/12 at 20w due to ruptured uterus (previa and accreta resulting in hysterectomy)
He only lived here on Earth for an hour, but he will live in our hearts forever.

Yes, I own several books. They were never meant to be children's fairy tales. They were meant to scare the living crap out of kids to stop them from doing certain things or teach them certain values.
That said, I much prefer them to the watered down Disney versions.
I remember reading a couple of them and being all "But where are the fvcking mice and their happy songs?!?!?! She dies?!?!?!!?"
Scarred for life.

At the end of Cinderella the wicked step-sisters are put into a barrel of spikes and rolled down a hill into the ocean. I'm not sure what happens to them in the Disney movie but I'm sure they're just left to deal with the annoying woodland creatures ad nauseum or something.
ETA: Which made me wonder, at the time, if they just had barrels full of spikes lyinng around back then or if they had to put in a 'special order' at the blacksmith's or something. And if they did have to special order the barrel would it cause some social awkwardness at the blacksmith's or would it just be like "Okay. Do you want me to go ahead and deliver them with those child-sized leg irons or is this a rush order?"
I had to do a paper in high school comparing the versions from today to the originals. Cinderella really sticks out. Cutting off toes and gorging out eyeballs....eww.

I could name a few people I wouldn't mind doing this to...

Me too. Those and the original Hans Christian Anderson stories. They are depressing and sometimes disturbing, but so much more interesting.
I have a book of collected fairy tales - a lot of Brothers Grimm but some others too - with the real endings. My favorite one was Goose Girl, where a princess was made to switch places with her servant...when the servant was caught, they put her in a barrell with nails hammered in and dragged her through town. Niiiiiiiiiice.
And Little Mermaid? Yeah, she doesn't marry Eric, she turns into seafoam.
I'm a German teacher and do a children's book unit with one of my classes. ?They always think they know the endings to things that I read them, but they always end up shocked at the end. ?It's so easy to tell who didn't do the reading assignments! : )
My middle and high school boys loved the originals. LOL one year every kid in my high school summer class had been to jail and they loved when I'd read a picture book or Grimm story. Once a kid couldn't see the picture, another boy snicker and the response was, "Biitch, you know you like the pictures too!" LOL
Re: s/o have you ever read the original brothers grimm?
