Ok, I'm practicing for DS' b-day next month and made this cake for Father's Day this weekend. I learned a lot and am glad that I did practice run! Not bad for a first time huh?

Not bad at all, that looks really good. You girls on here bake some really awesome cakes. I don't think mine would EVER turn out even close to that good.

Wow. Good job! I've always wanted to learn how to do cakes with fondant. Did you take a class somewhere?
I didn't take a class, I just found a couple of blogs where people were talking about making their first cakes I read what they suggested to do and went to Micheal's (a craft store) and they had a box of fondant for $6.99 it was white so I added food coloring. It was like working with playdoe. It really wasn't to bad.
This is the blog that I read about how to do it, although I bought the fondant she makes it from scratch:

Thank you so much! I've always been really interested in cake decorating.
Also, I see you are in St. Louis. My entire family (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins) all live in various areas of St. Louis! I was born at St. Johns.
After reading a couple of posts that said the store bought fondant tastes terrible and the marshmallow version is much tastier. I read the box and it said to add Vanilla or Butter flavoring. So I put about a tablespoon of vanilla that I got from Mexico (honeymoon) in before I rolled it out. Doesn't tasted to bad, it's very sweet. But not terrible. I think for DS' b-day I will do the marshmallow fondant.

I brushed it with water because there was powered sugar all over it from rolling it out on the counter. It's drying a nice matte finish now.
