Babies with bad breath?

Could antibiotics cause bad breath in baby?  My son's breath has been noticeably bad the last week or so (smells like food though), which co-insides with when he has been taking antibiotics.  He is also teething.  I keep brushing them every night in the hopes it will help, but it doesn't seem to.  Google says to bring him in to the Dr if brushing doesn't help, but I don't want to jump to that if there is a reasonable explanation.  Has anyone's child had bad breath from the food they ate, antibiotics or teething?

  • I've never noticed my kids to have bad breath.  Maybe you should just call your pedi's office and ask.

  • Yes!  It's a sign of digestive troubles - that the intestinal flora are out of balance.  My older son gets bad breath, so I put probiotics in his sippy cup and it clears it right up.

I wrote about the kind I use in my blog:

  • My DS started to get bad breath (not like an adult's though just mildly stinky) when he started to suck on his blankie when sleeping. Nothing to do about it except wash it all the time (i have 4 of them for this reason).

  • Mine has had bad breath, but I don't know if it was from antibiotics or not. I figure brushing might help, but normally for bad breath brushing your teeth doesn't help as much as brushing your tongue. I was going to ask my pedi about it at her appt.
