Spanking with objects

How is this different than spanking with a hand - both could be equally as harmful, right?!

My dad spanked with belts.  My grandma used a metal spatula.  DHs mom used a wooden spoon.

Honestly, DH wanted to make a paddle because his grandpa had one that was really effective and I said no - only because I heard that people can call CPS on you if you use a paddle (which is nuts to me).

Someone explain the difference?

  • You can easily apply far more force when spanking with an object.  And do more damage.  Physics.

  • I guess it looks scarier.  A hand coming at you?  Give it a high five!  A metal spatula coming at you?  OH SCHIT DUCK!!

My mom used rolling pins in our house.  My friend's mom had a bamboo whipping switch she specifically brought over from Taiwan for discipline.  One time it was out of reach and she used a pool cue instead.  Whatever works.  (SARCASM ALERT!!!)

Right, but if you're not spanking in anger you would use the correct amount of force at any given time, just like you would with a hand.

  • I'm pretty sure its against the law here to hit your kids with an object. Open hand is still ok within reason.

I think it goes along with....assault is different than assault with a dangerous weapon.

But you are assuming everyone disciplines their child in a calm, rational manner.  Imagine the abuse cases CPS deals with.

IDK, why is it ok to put your child in a crib, but not a cage?  Why can you put your toddler in a kiddie harness but not tie them up in the yard?

I can't tie them up in the yard? Indifferent

Just joking.  I get it, I do.  There is such a fine line with spanking.

This is exactly the reason using an object is considered corporal punishment, according to the law.

Yes when I was young I was spanked with a belt, wooden spoon, and breadboard. However, things have changed, and I would not use an object on my children. It has always been an open hand on the bottom.
