Somehow this sits funny with me. I can see training in some aspects like potty training but using training a child in a general fashion sounds weird to me.
It comes from a verse in Proverbs that says, "Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Basically, these people are taking isolated verses from the Bible and developing a parenting style. They're also making some huge errors in the way that they are interpreting the Bible.
For example, the "rod" that they so often speak of comes from another verse in Proverbs. The first mistake that they have made is thinking that the Bible was written for them. Proverbs is historically known to be written by King Solomon. We're talking about a man writing wise sayings in the ancient kingdom of Israel. Completely differerent parenting styles and back then, hitting was the accepted form of parental discipline. Since the Bible was not written to be a book on parenting, you have to look at the intended meaning of what was written in the context of the whole Bible.
If we now know that hitting is not the best form of discipline (which the author did not know back then), we should look at the truth that does come from the verse-that kids who are undisciplined end up spoiled so you should teach your kid how to behave. This verse does not imply that the only form of discipline should be the "rod".
Taking the English interpretation so far as to determine exactly which type of rod should be used is absurd. The author of the book needs to take a class on how to properly interpret Scripture.
