Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Pinching ?

I SAH with my son and he has been pinching lately.  I mostly think it's to get a reaction out of me because naturally I say "ouch".  But sometimes he does it when he doesn't get his way.

Our pedi suggested a moms day out type of thing where he can interact with other toddlers....he's 15 mo almost.

Anyhow, today at my sister's place, there was another toddler there and my son pinched him several times...once really hard.  I felt so terrible because he made the other boy cry.

I tell him "no pinching" since the onset and  explain that "pinching hurts" and remove him from the situation or sit him down if he continues to pinch me.  But it's not really working.

Is this a phase that should pass quickly?  What do you do if your child pinches/hits/bites another?  I know that kids will be kids, but I want to try to get him to stop pinching before I join a play group. WDYT? Thanks.

Oh and btw, the other moms there suggested that I pinch him back!  But I just don't think that's a good idea!....isn't that reinforcing the bad behavior?

  • I say keep doing what you are doing, maybe stop reacting, if possible, when he pinchs you when he doesn't get his way.

DS is 8 months old and he has started doing this too.  We move his hand away form the area he is pinching us and in a stern voice tell him "NO".  He laughs and smiles and thinks its funny, but we will continue doing this until he realizes that its not funny/nice.

  • I more worried about him pinching other kids.
