Help with 1st Birthday cake

DD turns 1 this week and I'm being overambitious and baking/decorating a cake for the party this weekend.  However, I need some good ideas.  Anyone do this for their DC?  If so, can I see what you did?  I'm not very good w/ decorating cakes but am definitely up for the challenge :)

  • i haven't made his stuff yet but i am making him a little monkey to smash and i am making a half of sheet cake with monkeys piped on and banana border around using buttercreme . i have to trial run it soon but it seems hard but very easy .
  • Nope, no real theme.  I guess if anything, there's a princess theme but I'm not overly concerned w/ carrying through to the cake.

I just saw some really cute ideas in Parents mag (a couple issues old I think) but maybe you could still find the article online.

    - they used M&M's, M&M minis and peanut M&Ms and lined them up to make stripes using the various sizes.  So like a line of all red in varying sizes and then blue etc... it looked cool.

    - they microwaved fruit chews and then rolled them out and used cookie cutters to cut shapes and put them on the cake to decorate it...

    - they used animal crackers and put frosting on them but still keeping the animal shapes and stood them up on the cake and used colored coconut to make grass

There were a couple more too....all seemed really easy and looked so cute in the pics

  • do you decorate mostly . you could get the doll pan and make a princess cake or i think wilton has a crown cake pan you could do that too. or you just do a layered cake a decorate it with princess theme items . i really need a girl next time around i love the girly stuff
  • I made DD's smash cake. I used 3 heart shaped pans and it was red velvet cake with cream cheese icing.

  • go on wilton .com by the way they have great ideas and tell yuou how to do them

  • I made a really cool cake for a friend's son one year. It was a sheet cake that I decorated like an aquarium and I used spearmint candies for sea weed, plastic $ store fish, and scotch mints for the gravel. I wish I had a picture but it was super cool and pretty simple to make
