When did you remove the insert in the infant carseat?

I think I want to remove that insert from my infant car seat--is there a standard of weight or height or anything that you need to follow to remove this to still be safe?  My LO hates this insert because it confines her too much, so I already have it at the highest setting.  Do I really need this?  She's almost 13 lbs and 2 months old now...think I can remove this?

Re: When did you remove the insert in the infant carseat?

  • I don't know if there's a guideline for removing it, but I'm about to take it out of our car seat. DS is 14 pounds and 2.5 months old.  It fits him very snugly, so I think it's time to take it out.

  • Our DS is very long, 21 inches...so it reaches the top of his head and he's starting to look uncomfortable in the seat.

I'm going to watch for other answers to this post, but instead of the insert I was just going to substitute with a towel to wrap around his head.

  • We have a Chico Key Fit 30. The instruction manual says 11lbs, DS is almost there, but I don't think his head is stable enough to be in the big part. I was going to ask the Pedi at his 2 month visit.

  • DS still fits in his so I leave it in.  He has a small head though.

  • We also have the chicco keyfit 30 and there are 2 inserts - one for the head and one for the body. The body insert is supposed to be taken out when the baby is 11 lbs. DD was almost 11 lbs at her 2 month check up, and the body support is getting snug. We'll leave the head support in until it gets in the way or is uncomfortable for her.
