Sorry, I'm not a fan because of a negative connotation.
Someone mentioned that it is a Biblical name that is not often used. Here's why. Saul in the New Testament was a prominent murderer of Christians, and when he converted to Christianity he was re-named Paul. He became the famous Paul that wrote several books of the Bible. He was a persecutor of Christians when he was named Saul, and that's why the name is not often used among Christians.

Ditto this but it's probably because I'm a church girl. Others might not think that though. I like Jacob with it the best.
I am a church girl and know that, but I don't think it's a big deal. There are horrible people in the world with certain names that people still use. Why is this different because it's in the Bible? My husband and I are considering using Kane, and it's not a problem to us that Cain in the Bible killed his brother.?

I think the reason that Biblical names with negative connotations aren't used as often is that the Bible is the foundation of faith for millions, and there have been over 3 billions of copies of it sold. That means that a lot of people all over the world have the same connotation when they hear the name. To me, that's different from a name you hear and just happen to have your own association with. I don't see anything wrong with the name Saul, I just wanted to bring up why it is a Biblical name that is rarely used.

Ditto. I'm a Christian and would never consider using Saul. Way too negative for a child. I'd go with Paul instead. Similar to Saul without the negative connotation and it won't be very popular among his peers. I like Jacob a lot. Aaron is also really nice.
I don't like Saul, but not because of the connotation. Hell, I loved Delilah, but my daughters name is Sammie (Samantha) and DH wouldn't let me even think about it.

I'm Jewish, so this is what I think of. I found a quote about King Saul that I plan to use in our baby announcements if we use the name:
"...(he) was a dutiful son. He was handsome, and a head taller than any Israelite." Book of Samuel 9.2
?
Thanks for input on middle names!?
