my friend's dad just passed away last month, and her facebook status says

"dear strangers, please quit asking me about my father's day plans in an effort to make small talk"

i just don't even know what to say to that.

Don't say anything. Just be their for her. After my dad died one of my moms good friends sent me flowers saying she was thinking of me on fathers day. You could do something like that.
