Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any DCs out there skip crawling?

I think DS is going to be in this category.  Still no crawling.  He will army crawl backwards if we put him on his belly but he hates it.  He will also lunge forward on all fours and then drop to his belly and start crying.  He always hated tummy time.  At this point, I am thinking he will be one of those babies who doesn't crawl at all.

  • I didn't :) but I am not a DC. my mom said I never crawled- went right to walking.

  • I am not meaning to be a downer here, but crawling is so very important. I would really try to encourage it and work with him. I work with a PT that said she has never ever seen a typically developing child not crawl. It is so important for fine and gross motor skills. Not crawling can also be a sign of furture developmental problems.

This exactly. I don't think DD will crawl, either.?

No offense, but a PT isn't a pediatrician. All of the pediatricians in my practice have seen DD and said that crawling is no longer considered a major developmental milestone. It's an old wive's tale that crawling leads to developmental problems :)

What???  Our pedi and everyone I've talked to said that it isn't even a milestone anymore, and a lot of kids don't crawl!  Have studies been done on the "future developmental problems" question?

  • Pedi didn't even ask if DS was crawling at his 9 mo appointment.  They only cared that he could stand with support and that he was attempting to cruise.  That leads me to think it would not indicate developmental problems - otherwise pedi would be asking about it.

  • i turned out ok :) don't worry.
  • From a rehab. therapist that works with peds....crawling is a VERY important milestone.  Pediatricians don't know the details of everything...they come to us for the specialties....speech, PT, OT.  With that said, crawling has been downplayed now because they don't have to do the typical crawling as we know it.  As long as they are doing some sort of hand over hand motion and building their shoulder muscles with pressure on them in some form they are fine.  Kids may also speed through the crawling faze so fast you don't even notice it.  My experience with peds has shown that those that didn't crawl at all have delays later either sensory, fine motor, etc.  However, those are also often the kids with delays in other areas too.  Hope that helps.  PM if you have further questions.

One more thing, I worried about my DS not crawling.  I did some work with him where I put something he really wanted in front of him and after a little fussing he got up and went and now he does it all the time.  He just needed a little coaxing to see it was really worth doing!

    Praying this little one sticks!
