Quick question on toddler fevers

My 2 year old was sent home from day care today with a fever.  When I got home and checked it rectally it was 103.6.  I'm thinking I should take him to the dr. but I just wanted to get another parents opinion to be sure I'm not overreacting.  Would you go to the dr  or not?

  • fevers scare me so yes I would bring him in to be checked

  • I'd give Motrin first, and if it isn't going down within 1/2 an hour, I'd get him in.

  • Unless it was over 105 rectally, I would start with Motrin and monitor how he feels. First, find out if an ear hurts (ask or see if he is pulling on one) because if it does I would get him in asap to get him checked and get on antibiotics if he has an EI. If not, then if he is acting somewhat normally, just keep giving Motrin. Now if he is really lathargic or not eating, absolutely take him in. Call your pedi. they will be able to guide you for your particular situation.

Short answer, no, a fever does not automatically warrant a trip to the doc in my house.
