Teaching is my calling. I love it. And, for the past few years, that's what I've been doing. But, I quit my job at the end of last school year because DH's job transferred us to Australia for 6 months. (Yes, it was awesome.
)
So, when we came back, what we found was a recession and a hiring freeze in all of our surrounding school systems. I've had one interview, but no leads on any other jobs for next school year.
I know what a blessing it is to be a SAHM, but I just don't think we can do it - financially for us, and emotionally for me. I know it's illegal not to hire me because I'm pregnant, but realistically, do you think that will make a big difference? Has anyone else been in this situation?
Thanks!
Re: Anyone else job hunting while pg?
I was laid off during my first trimester (I didn't know i was prego yet) but I did some job hunting. Fortunately, an old boss hired me back in February, but I didn't start until April. I told her when I was about 18 weeks that I was pregnant. She seemed ok about it, but I wouldn't tell ppl that I was pregnant while interviewing. I know it seems deceitful, but let's be honest, companies will discriminate even if it is against the law.
I'm job hunting right now. We moved for DH's internship last year and neither of us like it here. Now that we are pg, we are really looking to move closer to family and friends. We drive back home almost every weekend as it is and it just gets harder and harder to come back.
We weren't originally planning to move until next summer once DH graduates school for good, but after having the maternity leave talk with my boss (who screwed me 10 ways from Sunday and then said he probably wouldn't hold my job) I'm looking to make the move sooner.
I have an interview on Friday. Wish me luck!
The thing is, since I'm a teacher, by the time school starts in a couple of months, I'll definitely be showing.
School systems tend to be very understanding about maternity leave - particularly since I'm due in December and I'd have 2 weeks off, anyway.
So, if I can find a job, that aspect of it should work out nicely. It's just the waiting and searching that's so frustrating.
