BFing is no longer enjoyable :(

At first, BFing was going really well and I really enjoyed it....now, every time I BF DD, there it is just a lot of spitting up and crying and frustration.  But when she gets BM bottle fed, she is happy. 

I think it's because maybe my milk comes out too fast, or she is getting to much, there's no way to really tell.

Has anyone else been through this?  Will I have to become an exclusive pumper?

Maybe you could try pumping a little first before you BF her if your letdown is fast/forceful. Sorry, I don't know much about this but good luck!?

If its really important to you, you might want to contact an LC. I'm wondering if you have an overactive letdown. There are things you can do to remediate it and you wouldn't have to quit if you didn't want to. If it's not that, i'm sure they can help!

DD was like that..i had an extremely fast let down with her hyper gag reflex, it was not a good match for us...doesnt mean the same for you (she has some other issues, like being a tongue sucker, so she pushes out my nipple and sucks it back in with each such and proceeds to chew on it, leaving ME with scar tissue and nerve damage..fun) if you work with a LC, it will help you immensely (we worked with one for weeks and thats why we made it to 6 weeks instead of 3 days) your baby will eventually learn how to handle your milk flow and get to your hindmilk and take their time...

This happened for us to when my DD was about as old as yours.  It did seem to be b/c of forceful let down.  The problem resolved itself for us as my supply became more regulated.  I think the screaming and milk spraying everywhere during letdown lasted for about a week, though.

Thanks girls....I just went to kellymom and looked at the forceful letdown section and we have every single sign of it....I guess that's what's going on

I think I should also add that BFing didn't really become enjoyable for me until DD was about two months old.  I'm so glad I stuck with it!

Yes, we had the same issues around 2-3 weeks also because of forceful letdown.  Definately seek cousel from a LC.  And as PP said, your LO will eventually learn how to control her sucking to accomodate your letdown.  Now, partly bc of this, we complete a feeding in 5-8 minutes...so hang in there!!!

I'm from the Watertown area...not too far from Danbury!

I am thinking about seeing the LC at New Milford hospital where I delivered.  They were really helpful there.

I've been seeing Connie Marcy in Brookfield.  She is great and I highly recommend her.  The first appointment is a little pricey ($150), but you can go in for weight checks whenever you want and phone consultations are free.

I have been experiencing the same thing the past two weeks, except I think its because my let down is slower and he has to work for it, whereas the bottle is a constant flow...no help I am sorry!

It sounds like maybe you have a forceful let down.  Kiddo started having some problems like you describe around a month or so.  The good news is he grew out of it in a few weeks and got used to my fast flow.  Added bonus - he eats really quickly!

It really helped me to let the milk spray off in a towel when he pulled off screaming - now he just laughs when he gets sprayed and hops right back on even if it's still gushing.  I also found nursing lying down to be helpful.
