rant: why do daycares all close at 6pm?

I mean, in a town like DC where there are so many working moms, many of whom can't leave work until 6, I'm surprised there aren't more day cares that stay open later (say 7?) to give us time to leave work and commute to the center. Mine charges a dollar a minute for every minute I'm late after 6:05, but it's in Rockville and I work on Capitol Hill. Leaving early isn't an option for me (thankfully it is for DH), but neither is taking DS to work. Has anyone else noticed this?

  • That sucks you have to deal with being rushed like that - closing at 6 does seem really early, but FWIW they dont' all close at 6pm. Our current daycare and the one we used before this both stayed open until 6:30. I have 2 friends with long commute issues. One deliberately chose a daycare close to her office, so she'd be able to pick her daughter up on time. Granted she had to deal with the kid on the long commute, but she didn't have any other option. The other one, made arrangements for a family member to pick her son up for her each day. Unfortunately, being at the mercy of daycare sometimes is one of the things that goes along with being a parent! GL

  • It's sad really- I would love to have DS in a daycare nearby so I could visit him during lunch or even just for the peace of mind that I'm nearby in case he gets sick. We're on several different waitlist for centers downtown which would make it a lot easier- fingers crossed!

  • Ours closes at 6:30pm as well.
