Babies sleeping too much?

How old were your newborns when they started to be awake more?  I breastfeed for most feedings and give pumped milk for the others.  For the last couple of days they have been falling asleep right after eating, regardless if it is the breast or bottle.  Sometimes they sleep through until the next feeding which is usually 3-4 hrs later.  At night they fall asleep after the 8:00 feeding but when we put them down in the PNP they won't stay asleep so we have to start all over with putting them to sleep. I'm wondering if I should be waking them  up during the day.  What did you do?  This  morning dd was only awake for 1 hr and ds was awake 1 hr after the last feeding.

Re: Babies sleeping too much?

  • Our pedi told us to keep feeding the babies every three hours for about the first six weeks which meant waking them if they were asleep.  I was excited about them going four to five hours between feedings but the pedi compared it to a computer powering down.  She was concerned that they weren't getting enough calories to stay awake which made sense when I thought about it.

Were your babies early?  Are they gaining weight?

  • Well...mine were EXACTLY like yours. They would sleep for 4 hours at a time and then nod off right after their feeding. Doc told me not to let them go more than 4 hours so I would wake them. Then when they turned like 5-6 weeks they started to be more awake but would still go like 3 hours. Now they are up almost the entire day! It's crazy.....they take 30 min cat naps during the day and are starting to sleep through the night. Yesterday, they were up with the exception of 2 half hour naps...had their last feeding at 8 and slept till almost 5 this morning! Yours are totally normal! They are SO cute by the way!!!
