Anyone just set crib mattres on the floor INSIDE the actual crib?

I dont knwo if this is dangerous, but I pretty much just took the entire support rail out of the crib and laid the mattress on the floor inside the crib (if that makes sense).  Im just too scared of DS being able to climb/fall out of the crib--even on its lowest setting.  Anyone else do this?  It doesnt appear to have any dangers to it except maybe to my back when I have to bend over that far to pick him up out of the crib...

  • Do you have a picture of what you did? Because if it's what it sounds like...wouldn't there be a big space between the top of the mattress and the crib rails?

    edit: fixed a typo

    Can you take a photo?

  • How could he climb out? Is he like 3 feet tall? Am I missing something here?

  • I'm picturing the legs off...so basically like a pack n play?? I don't really understand.
  • I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about but my opinion is that I only use a crib the way it's suppose to be used. Anything else is not safe.  Why would you think it's not safe the way it's made?  How many millions of kids sleep in a crib the proper way and they don't get hurt.

This all sounds insane to me. You're setting things up for your child to get hurt.

  • I could never reach the floor of DD's room leaning over the side of the crib. Plus, there'd be a big gap between the bottom of the crib and the top of the mattress. Our crib's legs do not come off.

  • Hmmmm..no basically it is mattress on floor and then surrounded by the sides of the crib.  Picture the lowest setting on your crib...thats what it looks like, but just way further down.

I have the simplicity ellis crib...I took out the bottom metal prtion of the crib that the mattress lays on and just set the crib on the floor.

When DS stands up in his crib on the lowest setting Im afraid he could just pull himself up and over.  The lowest setting on my crib is not all that "low".

  • You cant take the legs off the crib and yes, it kind of looks like a pack and play. I would never do anything that I thought might seriously injure DS.  There i no gaps or spaces at the bottom.

Well, it's still a little hard for me to picture, but I have to agree with the pp that said that you really should only be using the crib in the way it was meant to be used. I would consider anything else unsafe.

If I felt that the mattress wasn't low enough (and really I think there is a strong possibility that you're being slightly weird about this and really it's fine Wink), I would get a new crib before I laid the mattress on the floor.

I would be afraid he would get himself caught between the bottom of the crib rails and the top of the mattress.  I would put the the crib back together and put it on the lowest setting.  If you use it the way it is intended, it will be fine. Unless your child is Spiderman.
  • Why don't you just turn the cirb 180??  Then the short side would be up against the wall...

  • Unless you imported your crib from some third world country I GUARANTEE HAVING IT ON THE LOWEST SETTING IS SAFE!!!! Have you ever thought that he could tip the crib rails over if they aren't being held down.

I'm telling you, this is crazy.  You are putting your child at risk.

  • I believe this is your crib.

If it is I would imagine that removing the metal platform would not be advised.  Even crib mattresses have a little give and I would think that when he stands or sleeps by the edge the mattress could sink and he could get stuck under the side rails.  Just my 2 cents.

  • I would think without the center supports, which also stabilize the crib, that if he were to pull on it, or try to stand up the whole thing could shift and fall over. I don't see the point. Why not just get those bed rail things and surround the mattress with that. I don't understand the need for a crib if you are just using it to surround the mattress.
  • Bad idea! Taking away the mattress support means there is nothing holding the crib up. It could fall on him.
  • If you have a crib similar to mine then I guess it doesn't seem too bad, but has your DS tried to get out of the crib already? ( my crib has all four sides go all the way to the floor)

This was my fear exactly when I was thinking about this- doesn't sound good!

  • I wouldn't do that. My nephew liked to climb out of his crib so this is what my sister and BIL got

  • after seeing the picture i vote don't do this! i feel like the short end of the crib especially could cause a hazard since it's a bit higher. i'd be afraid he'd get stuck between the mattress and the crib sides. like under the rails. i think you should reconsider this idea.

  • That doesnt sound very safe. Why dont you just put him in a pack and play? Its the same concept. My crib is on the lowest setting and he stands up and holds onto the side.  I guess if he jumped real high, then he could get out but otherwise no. lol
  • I will put the rails in.  But, no, there is no way the crib could fall over without the rail---I think you guys are not able to picture what my crib looks like.  Anyways, no, of course I dont want to harm my child.  I will turn the shortest part of the crib toard the wall as someone recommended.  Basically on the lowest setting DS can still get his arms full up and over the top part of the crib.

Anyways, No, Im not crazy or a bad mom...it was an idea that appears to be safe, but I agree i will put the rails back in for sure..  Thanks for the advice.

yeah we do have the same crib, but I would still leave the support rails on.

  • Oh and the rails in no way support the crib itself--just the mattress on its indicated settings.

Of course you don't want to hurt your son, and I don't think you're crazy...we all get a little weird about certain things sometimes :)

I thought the idea of putting the short side to the wall was a great one. I can't imagine a baby being able to get himself over the tall side of a crib.

  • I have that crib. It is on the lowest setting. And unless there is something in the crib to give him a boost, there is no way he's climbing out of it anytime soon.
  • I agree with Southern, you need to just buy a crib tent if you're that worried.

That's the crib I have.  its' the Divinci  crib.  I can't remember the name. But I would never put the mattress on the floor, and I know it goes pretty low because on the top setting I have a hard time getting DS out still (I'm 5'3") so I am a little worried when I have to drop it to the lowest setting! We will be lowering ours one level here soon.

  • how about apply  a mesh tent to the top of the crib

  • Don't go messing with the crib like that. If you are that concerned, you could put the mattress on the floor and put up a baby gate to keep him in his room (you'd have to clear everything else out and put the safety things in the outlets). Pack and play was another good suggestion.

Is there something in the crib that your LO could use to help climb out of the crib such as a toy or the bumper?

    GL!
