Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

I think my 2 yo has HFMD but I'm curious to get opinions of other Moms. I took her to the pediatrician (not ours she was off Friday and today) and I've been reading on the CDC website. She has the sores in her mouth and it started with a fever which only lasted about 24 hours but she has no rash on her hands and feet....she does however have a little rash (not diaper) on her bottom. Have any of your kids gotten HFMD without it being on their hand and feet? Is it going around in your area? (I've heard it is going around here). If it is HFMD I'm assuming the treatment is no different from what we've been doing which is just Tylenol and Ibuprofen and trying to keep her hydrated. Any concerns with me being pregnant?

I'm going to call OUR pediatrician but she's off again today....any thoughts? tia. FWIW, the pediatrician we saw Friday didn't mention anything about HFMD.

  • I worked in a daycare when I got pg with DS2 and a child in my class (2yrs) had gotten that. They just let me know, and took him out of daycare, and I watched myself. As long as you don't get "sick" like a fever or anything like that, you should be fine. The HFMD is actually contagious before you know they have it, it's tricky. GL!

  • My pedi told us that there are about 200 different childhood illnesses that involve a fever and a rash.  Like pp said once the rash comes out they are no longer contagious.  DD had Roseola.  It has the exact same symptoms...fever for a few days and when it breaks a rash all over.  This (or another one) could be what your DC has since it isn't on their hands or feet.  Since the rash has already appeared you should be on the home stretch.

  • My ds had HFMD with only sores in his mouth. He had a fever and was super cranky and wouldn't eat when I took him to the pedi. We just treated it with ibuprofen and cold things to eat. Not sure about if there is a prob for you being pg. I'm pretty sure I got it when ds did bc my mouth hurt too. I actually said to dh before I knew that ds had it that "it's just so weird, my mouth just hurts". I might just call your pedi or obgyn to see what they say, but it's prob not a big deal.

  • There is a virus called cocksacki (sp?) virus that is a precurser to HFM.  It can turn into HFM but most of the time does not.  It is something that young children get when it is summer with the symptms that you described and can be passed to children easily.  Adults typically dont get it because according to my pedi once you get it you never get it again.  My best friend mentioned that when her kids had it that her pedi said that there are acutally 3 viruses that can cause HFM....  So, with that being said, sounds like it.
