Sorry, another baby gate ? about cats!

So I'm looking at all these different baby gates and most of them are auto closing.  Probably a great feature but I'm worried because we have two cats who need to get in and out of the room to eat and get to the litter box and I don't want to have to open the gate for them all the time.  Will this be a problem if I get an auto closing gate, or are the slats usually big enough for cats to squeeze through?  Our one cat is tiny, but the other cat is ginormous, probably 18 pounds or so.

Ours have never had any problem jumping right over them. They learn fast.?

They can jump, I'm sure even the big one.  We have a big one, too.  But, James actually cut little holes in ours - like a cat door.  It's just big enough for them.  Looking back, we just promoted laziness in our cats, but it works.

We have a babygate to keep the dogs out of the cats' room, the cats jump over the gate with no problem.

Our cats refuse to jump over the baby gate (one is too fat, one is too stuborn). We prop it open with a heavy bag and just close it when we need it - any time we're upstairs. We don't have a gate at the bottom of the stairs.

We do this also, and my cat is a big girl and does fine with it.
