My brother teaches in Union County....He lives in Matthews, NC. Its a very nice area but its too flat for me....The country girl in me needs hills and mountains.

If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me. For I must be traveling on now. Because there are too many places I've got to see. -Allen Collins & Ronnie VanZant
My favorite verse!
I loved Raleigh when I visited. It's so pretty and seemed like there was lots to do. A's dad lives in Charlotte and loves it, as did another friend who lived close by.
I used to live in Charlotte, NC and would move back there at a moment's
notice. There is fabulous shopping to be had there among many other
things to do. It's close to both the beach and the mountains, it's
very clean and it's a progressive city with an awesome "Uptown"
(downtown) area. I worked at the Children's Hospital at Carolina's
Medical and can vouch for the superiority of healthcare vs. other
places that you might consider. It has the perfect blend of the four
seasons without any of them being too extreme. I loved it there. I
did a rotation at Duke Children's and will say that the Raleigh Durham
Chapel Hill area is nice as well...but I prefer Charlotte!
First...boo! Why are you moving?!? And, when do you think this move will take place?
I'm not from the Carolinas, but have spent a tremendous amount of time in NC (between family and vacations). I love the Raleigh/Cary area. Fuquay-Varina is a super cute suburb of Raleigh.
Additionally, I love, love, love Wilmington!! When my family ixnayed the Nagshead area in the early 90s (after it became NOVA/PA part deux), we started going to the beach in Topsail Island. Wilmington is about 45 minutes south of there and is wonderful! I would move there in a second, if we could get decent jobs (for our line of work).
I can't really speak to SC orther than Myrtle Beach, but I've heard that Charleston is a wonderful place to live.
I lived in Durham for 2 years and would go back in a hearbeat (although I wouldn't live in Durham - Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh are great). It's SO much cheaper to live down there.
Winston-Salem is also really nice.
We vacation at the OBX - both when I was in school and now with the inlaws. We go in the off season and it's not crazy down there. I don't think I'd want to live there year-round though - somewhat isolated and the hurricanes.
Goose, since D won't have a job past July, I'm trying to get him to consider it for this year. Though with the housing market the way it is, we probably couldn't sell our home for what we paid for it, so it's likely a no go. But I'm all about living somewhere else and since I'm from the South, I'd like to go back (but further down).
The only thing that really concerns me is the lack of nice shopping, so I need to find a place that has the nice stores and the nice feel of the small town South. Good luck, right?

Sounds like you would like Cary, Apex, Holly Spings, Fuquay-Varina, maybe Wake Forest - any of these suburbs of Raleigh are really nice. Good shopping is a short drive away. It's a great combo of metro and small town. I really love it here!
We recently moved from Baltimore to Raleigh NC. We'll we are actually right outside of Raleigh on the border of Wake Forest in a town called Rolesville. We LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it here. It is so child friendly...I love there is no traffic..people are so nice...and things are more layed back. If you have any questions please feel free to email me bethgerstner@gmail.com
Re: Any Carolina ladies on? Favorite place in N or S Carolina?
Ugh, so now that I cleaned up that mess, most of my post is gone. Oh well.
Thanks for the responses.
Me with my littlest.
S - we are contemplating a move to N.Carolina as well D is a golf pro so it's a no brainer for us. He can work year round.

Wake Forest would be good. Very small town feel but 15 min from a huge mall in N. Raleigh.
I'm in Cary (just west of Raleigh). Lots to do within driving distance.
