Fictional character? I'm a pretty big reader. I can't think of many names I couldn't tie to a book in some way.
Place with meaning? Snort. We've joked about naming a girl Niagara, because we got engaged there...and it would make her name Niagara Falce. This goes with naming a boy Truman Robert so we'd have a Tru R. Falce.

I don't think I would ever choose to name a child "after" something like that. I definitely get name ideas from books/movies/tv that I like.

I used to work with a girl named Arwen after the character from Lord of the Rings. She hated it and went by her middle name when she went off to college. When she came back for the summer, she tried to get everyone to call her by her middle name.
Tess!
I'm a geek too! I love the name Kayleigh! My DH loves Firefly and I am watching it for the first time. We only have 4 episodes left. :-( and we have a cat named Apollo (from Battlestar Galactica)
I don't think there is any songs I would name a DC after. I am a huge reader but I can't think of any names that "pop" out at me. Although if we have a daughter next we want to name her Abigail, which I like from Abigail Adams and if we had a boy I like the name Sam which is from a TV show we both like.
We liked the name Sierra. Both of us lived in Cali for awhile and we've done camping in the Sierra Nevadas. But it never was a finalist.
I can't think of any songs.
I'd consider Alanna (from Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness novels), but it's not really DH's style so I don't think it would get far. And he would be totally against picking a name from my fantasy books anyhow.
That's similar to my name! I'm Kali, pronounced Kale-ee.
ANd yes... my child is named after a son (and a Saint)! If our next child is a girl, she'll be Cecilia Evelyn... Cecilia is the Patron Saint of Music (hubby is a musician) and I love that Simon & Garfunkel song.
We got the idea for Stella's middle name (Lucia) from A Room with a View, but we weren't naming her after the character. We just liked the way the names sounded together.
If DS had been a girl, I wanted to use the name Anica.
My favorite movie as a kid was Pippi Longstocking and the neighbor girl was named Annika. I have always loved the name. And, it's a pretty obscure reference, so it's not like people would be associating it with the movie.
Nola is named after New Orleans, LA. We just love the spirit of the place. Nola did turn out a little like her namesake, full of spunk and the willingness to enjoy whatever situation she finds herself in.

Re: Non-clicky poll: Would you consider naming a child...
Song? Uh, no.

Neither of those would EVER happen.

Sure. I first heard DD's name in a song.
There are a lot of literary figure names I love. My Dad wanted to name me Florentyna from The Prodigal Daughter. I'm glad he didn't.

Yep! As long as the name wasn't something way too youneek! I think names that have special meaning are wonderful!
Before we found out DD was a girl, we talked about boy names and our top contender was the name of the place where DH and I met. I love it!
