Help with DD's name

If we have a girl (which I think I am although I can be totally wrong) DH and I are naming her Mary Ariel(le) Elizabeth. DH's female line (mom, grandmom, etc) were all a Mary something, ie Mary Ann, Mary Ellen and since his grandmother passed a few weeks after she found out we were pregnant we would like to honor the tradition, except with the name that I have always loved. So how should we spell it? So far my options are either Mary Ariel or Mary Arielle. If you have another suggestion please let me know!

I tried making a clicky poll a couple of times with no luck so hopefully this way is fine =(

Re: Help with DD's name

  • In my mind, Ariel is pronounced "AIR-e-ull" (emphasis on the first syllable)and Arielle is pronounced "Air-e-ELLE" (emphasis on the last syllable). Does this help your spelling?

(Also, to make a clicky poll, make sure that you have something typed in the regular "message" part of the post as well as the poll part, if that makes sense.)

  • To me, the two are pronounced slightly differently.  So that would affect which I chose.

    IMO:  Ariel= air-ee-uhl.  Arielle= ah-ree-elle.

Both would be very pretty, though.

  • To me Mary and Ariel run together a little bit and ends up sounding like Muriel. I might do something like Mary Brielle instead.

  • Yeah, two pronunciations. I teach a lot of girls named Arielle at they all pronounce it Ah-ri-elle, which is different than Ariel (think mermaid). I am not a huge fan of Mary Ariel Elizabeth...seems like a mouthful and. And Mary Arielle just looks a little strange to me. Like the juxtaposition of a very classic name and a kind of trendy name.

What about Maria to honor her? I think unless you're going to pair Mary with something classic (like Kate or Katherine or just plain Elizabeth), it's a bit weird.

I agree. They run together when said too quickly. Or.. it's too repetitive with the "airy" sound- Mary Ariel.

Ariel is very pretty though. And Mary has meaning so I like both names. Just not together.

I have to agree with the running together...Mary Arielle doesn't run together as much.  How about Mary Elizabeth Arielle...it breaks it up a bit more.

  • How about Mariel Elizabelth???Sounds like Maa ree el

I have a friend with that name and I just love it!

this is a great idea! I agree that Mary Ariel is way too repetitive.

Mary Arielle Elizabeth is a lot of name.

So Mariel Elizabeth sounds perfect to me.
