Drawstring Sleep Sack

I was talking to MIL yesterday and telling her how I am looking forward to sewing some new things including sleep sacks ect.  She told me not to use snaps as it just becomes annoying quickly and I told her that the pattern I have is a zipper that the stop is at the top so when closed it ends at the feet and you don't have to remove it for changing plus no snaps means there is a less chance of baby waking up if you are changing when they are asleep.  So she tells me that I should make some with a drawstring and that's what she did with DH.  Clearly he's fine, but having any kind of string that close to the baby gets my caution up.  What do you think?  Am I paranoid as it's only at the baby's feet or would you go for a zipper instead?  Drawstring would be much more cost effective, but you tell me what you think.

Re: Drawstring Sleep Sack

  • By swaddler do you mean some kind of sleep sack or an actual blanket/whatever for swaddling?  If you're using it for swaddling I don't see how either zippers or snaps would work since the closures will never be exactly in the same place depending on how you wrap them and how big they are.

That being said, I would never let my kids sleep in anything with a drawstring.  Even if it's at their feet.  They are bendy little suckers and it wouldn't take much to get a hand hooked in the drawstring or something.

  • Oops, you're right, I meant sleep sack, changing it now...I couldn't remember the right words.  Duh *hits self in head*
  • LOL ok that makes more sense.  I would do either snaps or a zipper (with some kind of cover where the zipper ends up so they can't pull it open).

I've noticed that with my two they're either going to wake up when you change them, or they're not.  It doesn't really matter if you're unsnapping, unzipping, pulling something up, or just changing a diaper with nothing else on them.  It's all in what stage of sleep they're in at that moment.

  • Ditto leslie.  Probably not a good idea.

  • Okay good, so I'm not off base!  My MIL has some weird ideas when it comes to parenting and I usually let what she says go in one ear and out the other, but I figured I ought to ask.  I'll stick with zipper (covered, thanks for the tip) or applix, (I don't have one of those snap setter things) thank you ladies!  MIL has no business giving anyone parenting advise...bitter....grrr
