LO's sitter just called

DS went to his sitter's house for the afternoon. She just called and said he isn't taking the bottle. I was afraid this would happen. I've been giving him a bottle on and off since he was born so that he would be used to it by the time I went to work. The last couple times he refused it and I was concerened but thought maybe he wasn't hungry etc. What do you do if your LO won't take the bottle and you work?! UGgh this is making this so much harder now.

Re: LO's sitter just called

  • My DS usually goes on a hunger strike every Monday. It's just a difficult transition for him. He eats a ton when I go home.. but some days my nanny can only get him to take about 4 oz. Usually everything is back to normal on Tuesdays. In fact, this past Monday was the first Monday he would takes his bottles without a fight.

I would just give it a bit of time & let him adjust to someone new feeding him.

  • Madeleine didn't take a bottle for my DH the first three days she was home with him. We fed her with a medicine dropper...

After she started sucking on it, she got annoyed it wasn't happening as fast as she wanted so she gave in and took the bottle. It took a few days, though. It was tough...we had a 3 big droppers that we had lined up to feed her to take the edge off so that she wouldn't be too upset to eat.

it was like this...looks like a syringe. https://www.americarx.com/Products/33778.html

Try not to worry...your lo will take a bottle.

  • Thank you, guys! That makes me feel a lot better that it's only temporary!
  • It's definitely temporary.  My DD did the same thing.  I even talked to the pedi about it.  She said it was perfectly normal and that DD would not starve herself to death and she would drink if she needed too.  That gave me SOME comfort, but it still sucked when I knew she wasn't eating much.
  • My mom had the same problem when she tried to give him the bottle and she just kept trying and he eventually took it. She also, when he got hysterical, would let him calm down and rock him and keep him in a quiet soothing place so he could relax. It went in waves. One week he was a bottle protestor and then the next he took it like a champ.
