Frozen sperm and IUI

Hello!  I just found out that I got a BFN for my first IUI, and my doctor would like to do the second IUI with frozen sperm, since DH will be out of town.  He also wants me to do injectables, which I'm nervous about (but I know I need to get over it!).  I was wondering if you knew of any success stories with IUIs and injectables.

I apologize if this has been asked before.  I've lurked on this board quite a bit, but not enough!

IUIs and injectables are successful all the time around here!  I think the success rate is around 25% or so.

With frozen sperm it can be tricky though; I would recommend having your DH freeze more than one sample. We went through this and even though DH's SAs were always normal, his post thaw motility and count were awful.  In fact, the doc that did the insemination thought we were dealing with MFI.

Now - if you consider ladies who use spem banks, you'll know that the thawing is not always a problem.  But it can be.  So perhaps have him leave samples a week apart in case one doesn't survive as well.

    GL!

  • Like Epphd said, the thawing is the tricky part. FYI...we used frozen sperm for 5/7 IUIs and both IVFs. DH has performance anxiety and it just made my life easier knowing that we'd have something if he had an issue.  If I remember correctly, at my RE they divided the sperm into vials of about 20 million (pre-thaw). They used 2 vials for each IUI and 1 for each IVF. Thaw rate was about 60%.

  • Thanks for the tips and words of encouragement!
  • I used dh's frozen sperm for my last IUI.  We were surprised how crappy the post-thaw #'s were.  Fresh was 55 million with 80% motility and thawed was 13.6 mil. with 28% motility.  I'm sure some samples are better than others, but I was very disappointed.  RE says his estimate is 2-3% decreased success with frozen vs fresh IUI's. Good luck!
