Anyone take Heparin when pregnant?

A friend of mine is newly pregnant and has had several miscarriage.  Her RE told her to take heparin and she is nervous....but then again, who isn't nervous when you get the BFP after a couple of pregnancy losses.  Any insight, good websites or info is appreciated, just trying to help her out in the stress level.  Of course I told her to talk to her doctor with any concerns and find out specifically why he is rec the heparin.

Re: Anyone take Heparin when pregnant?

  • I've never heard of heparin being used but I have heard of baby asprin.  Heparin and baby asprin both help to prevent blood clots which can cause miscarriae so I'm sure that's why.  I actually took baby asprin for the first trimester with Connor because of a previous loss.

Hey, Julie, Not sure if you have asked this over there, but you may want to ask on the TTC after a loss board or the pregnancy loss board. Best wishes to your friend.

  • I actually have heard about heparin being used and I do want to say it was because of previous loss to prevent blood clots.  I think (although I may not be remembering correctly) that some of the ladies on the Success after IF board may have had to take heparin.  They might be able to help with a better answer.
  • I did!  Actually, I took lovenox (another blood thinner) for the first eight months, then switched over to heparin for the last four weeks.  I ended up stopping the heparin because I had a bad reaction.  I was on the blood thinners (in addition to baby aspirin) because of three pregnancy losses and a mutation of a blood clotting disorder.  Has she had any repeat pregnancy loss testing?

Some doctors will just prescribe heparin/lovenox as empirical therapy - I think it's a fairly new thing though.  I saw a hematologist who specializes in blood clotting disorders and pregnancy loss, and he was the one who monitored my blood levels during my pregnancy to determine how I was doing on the lovenox, whether the dosage needed to be changed, etc.

  • One of my good friends has a blood clotting disorder and took lovenox and/or heparin. She had to inject herself once a day while pregnant and then for a couple months after she had the baby.  She went to a hematologist regularly while pregnant as well as perinatal specialist too.  Everything turned out fine during the pregnancies. In fact she has had 2 kids while having to do this!
