How are you dealing with heartburn - other than Tums, Pepcid, etc?

It just keeps getting worse and worse.  Last night I was practically in tears I had such bad heartburn/acid indigestion.. any tips/advice you can give me?  Is there a food I can eat that will help or something?

  • i assume zantac is also on your list of things you have tried?

zantac has been helping me, although less and less, and i also keep propping myself up high on pillows when sleeping- that helps a lot too

  • My doc gave me an Rx for Protonix.  He started me out on a sample pack before having to pay for the prescription.  It worked far better for me than eating Tums like candy.  G/L!

Other than trying to find out what food is causing the worst of it by process of elimination, I recommend Zantac.  It knocks out my heartburn quick.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • Tums and pepsid don't work with me.  I use Zantac 75 and it has been a lifesaver.  No foods help either.
  • Zantac has helped the most but at times it is still unbearable. I woke up 2 mornings ago at 4am and threw up from it

  • Probably not the best thing for my weight gain, but I try to eat a little snack when I have heartburn. I noticed it gets really bad when I have an empty stomach and am drinking a lot of water. I usually have a few crackers to get something in my stomach, along with the Tums I chew like crazy!
  • Try to keep your stomach full (or at least not empty).  Sometimes even getting just a little hungry (especially overnight) can cause the heartburn.  I drink a glass of milk before I go to bed and it helps
  • Eat a handful or two of plain whole almonds. If you have bad heartburn, it may not make it go away, but it certainly should help. I HATE the taste and texture of Tums and was told to try that but a patient of mine. It helped me.

  • Drinking milk helps me and I have heard from other mothers Zantac is the best but havent tried it yet. Feel Better!
  • Milk and ice cream, particularly mint ice cream.  Anything cold and minty has really helped me.

My OB/GYN gave me Nexium and it works GREAT - takes it away completely.  It won't hurt the baby because they give a liquid form of Nexium to babies with heartburn.

  • I got prescription Zantec which works wonders.
  • Zantac maximum strength 150 is the only thing that's working for me so far.
  • Celery!  Oh, and milk...but there is a reason you get celery with buffalo wings!

  • I take the Tums Quik Packs, its powder and you just let it dissolve in your mouth, then swallow. I've never actually chewed tums, something about that grosses me out. Anyways, that works for me! When I didn't have any in the house, I drank a small glass of milk, which seemed to soothe the heartburn. And of course, propping yourself up with pillows like someone else mentioned.

I second this!  I have a bowl of mint chip ice cream every day, it is my LIFE SAVER.  of course, I also take zantac, twice daily, the maximum strength.    Milk is also very helpful, I'm not a big milk drinker so I sometimes drink choc milk.

    mentos!

seriously, they work. mint flavored only, though. ;)

  • A small vanilla milkshake from McDonalds cures heartburn that meds just can't touch! Embarrassed
  • I've had several people recommend "papaya extract" for heartburn.  I just got some today so I can't personally vouch for it.  But I got it because I was worried about constantly popping Tums.  The papaya extract comes in the form of chewable tablets that you're supposed to take after a meal.  Got it at Whole Foods.  Good luck!
